THE WOOD LIFE
Junckers' has a long history of supplying sustainable solid hardwood flooring. We find out more.
There is a distinct shift within the construction industry towards a more environmentally-sustainable way of working, highlighted by, amongst others, the Architects Declare campaign. Nowadays, every detail of a build or project counts. Any material specified needs to meet crucial criteria: is it sustainable? Is it reusable? Is it recyclable? How long will it last? How is it produced? How can it contribute to a better cared for environment? Every component of a build plays a part, from the roof to the floor we walk on.
Long before sustainability was fashionable, Danish specialists in solid hardwood flooring Junckers was at the forefront of their industry – supplying a staggering 100 million square meters to private houses and public spaces – but always with respect for the forests and the environment. The company started as it meant to go on back in 1930 when a Master of Forestry, Flemming Juncker, sought to utilise and preserve his country’s forests more responsibly. At the time, the economic viability of the Danish beech forest was in a bad state with much of the beechwood being sold as firewood, but the young forester strove to find a better use and set up a solid hardwood flooring company that is many decades later still helping to sustain thousands of acres of precious forests.
Today, the timber that Junckers uses in the manufacture of its floors is PEFC and FSC certified. The majority of the wood comes from northern European forests, where competent foresters are ensuring that the hardwood forests remain in a very good condition. There is no felling without replanting, and new trees are planted to such an extent that forest areas are growing steadily.
This year, Junckers has added further certification to demonstrate the sustainability of its wood flooring products. The Environmental Product Declaration, EPD, assesses Junckers’ manufacturing and material sourcing activities and the accreditation counts towards BREEAM, LEED and DGNB assessments. An EPD presents data in relation to environmental impact, resource use, waste categories and

output flow, simplifying the specification process by breaking down important data pertinent to achieving a building’s sustainability accreditation. Junckers is among the first wood flooring manufacturers to hold an EPD certification.
With so many years of experience, Junckers is an expert on timber. All its wood is utilised 100% with as little wastage as possible. Even the large quantities of wood chips, left over from the process of converting logs to parquet staves, are used in the power and generating plant supplying the factory and nearby town with energy.
But apart from its integrity in supplying sustainable materials, Junckers also scores highly for another reason – and that’s the end product. A Junckers hardwood floor has a virtually limitless lifespan which is not the case for many other types of flooring such as laminates, veneers and other pretenders. Supplied with a 20-year guarantee, solid hardwood flooring need only periodic sanding and resealing to keep the floor looking that way forever. Long-lasting products, rather than those which wear out quickly and need to be replaced, are very much in tune with our times as consumers increasingly demand quality and durability over the cheap or fashionable quick fix.
In addition to its environmental credentials, wood flooring is suitable for a multitude of different environments, anything from public buildings to private homes and sports arenas and can only increase in popularity, particularly as other types of flooring fail to meet our modern demands. Junckers flooring has a unique smooth, low-static surface which cannot harbour dust or mites, so it is perfect for allergy sufferers. The company’s products have received certification from the Danish Indoor Climate board. What’s more, low odour and low emission seals make the floors ultra-healthy for the indoor environment. Junckers is indisputably a forward-thinking company that is always striving to ensure there’s a great future for timber, whether at home or in an important public building.
