SMOOTH SAILING
F. Ball explains why dual-bond systems have become a popular choice for installing carpet on board cruise ships.
Contractors installing carpet in large areas, such as function venues, will typically require an adhesive that will develop a high bond strength to hold floorcoverings firmly in place over the lifetime of an installation. However, carpet and underlay installed with this kind of adhesive will require mechanical removal when they need replacing. For this reason, dual-bond systems have been developed, which utilise adhesives with different characteristics, including ones designed to create a peelable bond to prevent floorcoverings or underlay moving laterally when subject to normal foot traffic, while allowing them to be easily lifted without damaging the subfloor.
For example, F. Ball and Co. Ltd.’s Styccobond F40 dries to form a transparent, permanently tacky coating to provide a release bond for underlays. This can be part of a dual-bond system, whereby the carpet is then adhered to the underlay using a specialist adhesive for textile floorcoverings, such as F. Ball’s market-leading Styccobond F3, which will develop the high bond strength required to withstand expected levels of wear.
PERMANENT BOND Styccobond F3 is a water-based rubber/resin flooring adhesive that offers excellent wet grab and rapidly builds up a high bond strength. This delivers a flooring installation that won’t ruck, move or lift throughout its working life, making it suitable for areas that are expected to be subject to high foot traffic.
The adhesive is suitable for installing a wide range of textile floorcoverings, including hessian, felt, secondary latex and rubber foam backed carpets, as well as cork tiles up to 3.2mm thick. It is also protected against bio-degradation and can withstand wet cleaning, essential for maintaining the appearance of carpeted venues.
Both Styccobond F40 and Styccobond F3 are suitable for use over normal underfloor heating systems and approved for use in marine flooring installations.
MARINE PRODUCTS FROM F. BALL AND CO. LTD. USED IN
FERRY INSTALLATION Styccobond F3 and Styccobond F40 have been used together in a dual-bond system to install carpet as part of the a the refurbishment of a number of deck areas on one of P&O’s passenger and cargo ships. The work was carried out while the ship was in dry dock in Gdansk, Poland by Hull-based Total Flooring.
Having prepared the deck floors, where necessary, with Stopgap 1200 Pro floor levelling compound, contractors installed a combination of Tarkett iQ Granit vinyl, Polyflor Voyager vinyl planks, and heavy contract broadloom carpet. Stopgap 1200 Pro is specially designed for use over old adhesive residues, without the need for mechanical removal of the residue or priming. It is low-odour, self-smoothing and fast drying. Applied at a thickness of 2-5mm, the compound is dry enough to receive floorcoverings from as little as four hours.

Carpet was installed in the ship’s brasserie restaurant and the crew and drivers’ bars. A peelable bond was achieved by allowing Styccobond F40 to completely dry before laying the underlay. Styccobond F3 was then used to adhere the carpet to the underlay.
Styccobond F46 pressure sensitive adhesive was used to install the vinyl floorcoverings. Tarkett iQ Granit vinyl was installed in the main corridors of the drivers’ deck, as well as in the crew’s mess. Polyflor Voyager vinyl planks were installed in one of the ship’s restaurants, which features a floor area of 220m2
on each side of a central buffet.
Styccobond F46 is a solvent-free adhesive that dries to a permanent tacky film. It is used to reduce the incidence of trowel serrations shadowing through thin vinyl flooring and is designed to give strong initial tack and a high bond strength, which continues to build as the area is trafficked.
Commenting on the project, Neil Polson, managing director of Total Flooring, said: “All of the F. Ball products worked a treat on this refurbishment, which is important when you’re working so far away from home. It’s also good that the F. Ball range includes so many products certified for marine applications.”
