EDITOR’S VOICE Hello and welcome to the July issue of TCF,
Having worked on this magazine for coming on eight years, it’s inevitable that I have picked up a few tips regarding flooring installation. So, when I bought an old house in need of a total renovation, the floors were one area where I was confident in my knowledge of what would need to be done. However, after removing the cracked ceramic floor tiles in the kitchen, I was faced with a sloping, uneven substrate, layers of old levelling compound and hard-to-shift tiling adhesive. It was obvious that the surface was in need of more prep before the new cabinets could go in.
This is when I called back the experts from my local family-run retailer Gainsborough Flooring. Having a commercial side to the company as well, there’s not much that Gainsborough hasn’t come across. Mark Rawson, sales manager, took one look and recommended asphalt to make a clean level surface. We’ve featured a few articles from the Mastic Asphalt Council over the years but nothing compares to the practical knowledge learnt on the job so I simply never would have considered it.
Two days later, Brett and his team from Roofing Direct Ltd appeared with an asphalt truck and got to work. I didn’t know what to expect but in under an hour, the job was done. Not only was the new surface down but it was ready to walk on in two hours and work could start the following day. I now have a brand-new kitchen which is ready for the LVT installation to begin.

It’s fair to say that renovations can have a life-changing effect on the people using a home — even more so if they have special needs and require necessary adaptations. In this issue we shine a spotlight on Band of Builders, the national charity that transforms homes for members of the UK construction industry who are battling illness or injury. Newly appointed CEO Gavin Crane tells us about some of the recent work the charity has completed and the plans for this year's Big Brew event to improve construction workers' mental health. And in our Adhesives focus, we report on a project where products donated by F. Ball and Co. Ltd were used to install floorcoverings against the clock on BBC One’s DIY SOS: The Big Build.
I hope you enjoy the issue.
