EDITOR’S VOICE Hello and welcome to the February issue of TCF.

While we were all eager to turn our backs on 2020 and start the new year afresh, 2021 has begun with the same stringent regulations and working practices brought about in response to Covid-19 last March.

As a nation, we are in our third lockdown over a 12-month period. However, this time it’s different. We have learnt to adapt to new challenges in the way we work, whether that’s from home or on site. Throughout the Covid-19 crisis the flooring trade has stood together and industry bodies such as the Contract Flooring Association (CFA) have worked tirelessly to help contractors access government support and navigate new regulations. In our What’s New Section, we shine the spotlight on the many benefits that CFA membership provides, not only in times of conflict but also triumph.

During the first national lockdown, last spring, PMI data indicated that March saw the steepest downturn of construction output since the recession of 2009. At that time, it was difficult not to look at those figures and feel despondent. However, the latest data, as seen on page 12, shows that the value of all construction contract awards in 2020 was £57bn – a slight decrease of 4.7% on 2019.

There has been a step change in the types of contracts awarded and most significant is the increase in the medical and healthcare sector which saw a sharp rise of 62% in 2020 compared to 2019. Without doubt, this is due to the Covid-19 response with new Nightingale hospitals as well as testing and vaccination centres being rapidly created to meet demand.

It seems only fitting then, that we take a look at the healthcare sector this month. In our cover story, we hear from Polyflor on how their adhesive-free safety flooring has been specified at Nightingale hospitals across the UK. We also report on the refurbishment of a doctors' laboratory in Manchester where F. Ball products were used to install flooring over raised access panels.

As well as insightful features on modular flooring and screeds, resins and coatings, we have a spectacular Makeover of the Month from the Netherlands where a Dutch flooring artist has created a unique installation that looks like the growth rings of a tree.

Thanks for reading and stay safe.
