SUBFLOOR PREP

Plus, as a bonus, it measures ambient temperature and humidity. App integration and Data Storage

Gone are the days of using a paper and pencil to document MC measurements and moisture trends. The Orion 950 can automatically collect data, store it, and integrate it with the free FloorSmart or Woodshop MC apps on your smart device. Keep track of moisture trends, generate graphs, and more.

Calibrate Anywhere, Anytime

Most pinless moisture meters have to be returned to the manufacturer for recalibration. Not the Orion 950. It comes with a paired, on-demand calibrator, so you never have to waste precious time and money sending it back to the manufacturer for recalibration.

Dual-depth Reading

The Orion 950 isn’t limited to just shallow or deep moisture measurement. It can accommodate various wood plank thickness, measuring either at 0.25” or 0.75” depths.

Now that you know just some of the benefits of using the Orion 950 to assess the moisture condition of your wood subfloor, let’s look at exactly how you can use the Orion throughout the installation process.

HOW TO USE THE ORION 950 DURING THE INSTALLATION PROCESS

Here’s how you can use the Orion 950 throughout installation so that you can avoid the detrimental effects of unmanaged moisture in your wood subfloor and your wood floor.

Pre-delivery of Wood Flooring

During this stage, you absolutely must measure the MC of the subfloor and compare it to the EMC of the installation location. This way, you accomplish two things. Firstly, you know how much your subfloor must adjust to reach equilibrium or if you need to make plans for moisture mitigation. Secondly, you know the MC that your flooring needs to be to match up with the subfloor.

During Acclimatisation

After your flooring arrives, check the MC of both the flooring and subfloor daily. Then, wait until the MC difference is within the NWFA guidelines:

“For solid strip flooring (less than 3” wide), there should be no more than 4% moisture content difference between properly acclimatised wood flooring and subflooring materials” (NWFA Installation guidelines, p. 6).

Before Underlayment

Underlayment is great for sound absorption and some moisture protection, but depending on the underlayment, moisture can still migrate up toward the floor, causing issues. Measuring MC at this stage will help you know if you need to delay installation.

Mid-installation Checks

Halfway through the installation, use the Orion 950 to recheck the ambient conditions. How is the temperature? Humidity? Based on the measurements you take, you can determine next steps, such as bringing in fans, humidifiers, turning on the HVAC, etc.

Final Verification and Documentation

Here is where that handy data storage and app integration comes in. Using the Orion 950 along with the FloorSmart or Woodshop MC, you can generate a report to share with your clients or builders for their records (and for yours).

SUBFLOOR MOISTURE TESTING IS CRITICAL

A subfloor with unchecked moisture is a subfloor doomed to failure (and that dooms the flooring above it, too). But one simple solution can keep your subfloor, flooring, and reputation in pristine condition: An Orion pinless wood moisture meter.

Measure twice, install once, and then that’s that. An Orion pinless moisture meter can make these results a reality.
