PERFECT BALANCE

Junckers’ solid oak hexagonal parquet graces new workplace design in Copenhagen.

No less than three different Junckers oak floors have been specified for an innovative new workplace in the Danish capital. PHL Architects has designed an inspiring and elegant new headquarters for financial company AP Pension with the aim to support and foster collaboration and wellbeing.

The interior features open, flexible spaces that promote interaction and collaboration among employees as well as the wider community. Drawing inspiration from the Nordhavn area’s industrial heritage, the building’s form and materiality create a perfect balance between elegance and function. Central to the design is the use of three types of Junckers’ solid hardwood flooring to define different zones and support the building’s overall visual identity. Selected not only for its aesthetic contribution, but also for its sustainable credentials, solid hardwood is a durable, natural material that contributes to a healthy indoor climate while reinforcing the building’s long-term environmental ambitions.

Sustainability was integral to the project from the outset. The new building is expected to achieve DGNB Gold, from the German Sustainable Building Council, for overall sustainability performance and the prestigious DGNB Diamond certification for architectural quality.

In the circulation areas centred around a large atrium, the architects selected Junckers’ Oak Hexparket. The hexagonal parquet staves, which are made from offcuts in Junckers’ plank flooring production, create a sculptural effect with a three-dimensional quality that adds rhythm and texture to the whole space. The solid oak staves are laid to form an intricate hexagonal design mimicking the geometric pattern found in nature. The staves measure 370mm on all sides by 20.5mm thick. The floor is delivered with an untreated surface to be finished on site.

In contrast to the lively and decorative style of Hexparket, PHL Architects specified Junckers’ Twin Herringbone – a prefinished parquet floor that has become of the company’s most popular products since it was introduced. Installed in a classic square basket pattern in breakout areas, meeting rooms and workstations, it adds a classic element to the interior. An updated version of a much-loved classic, Twin Herringbone is delivered with a hardwearing factory-finished surface ready to walk on as soon as it is installed, saving on costly and time-consuming installation work as the floor does not have to be sanded, filled and treated after installation. Made from Junckers’ classic two- stave flooring, each board consists of two rows of staves: one full-length and one with two half-length staves, with an authentic pattern and elegant look. Staves measure 129mm wide x 516.6mm long x 14 or 22mm thick.

The third flooring type, solid oak plank flooring used on the organically shaped walkways as well as on the imposing staircase, ties the scheme together perfectly and ensures continuity of
