WOOD & LAMINATE
FAST & FLEXIBLE
The experts at Bjelin outline the advantages of floating wood floors.
When it comes to flooring installation, the debate between floating floors and glue-down options often comes up. While both methods have their merits, floating installations are the more flexible, cost-effective and simple choice for most types of space in both the commercial and residential markets.
One of the most compelling reasons to choose a floating installation is that it’s straightforward. Floating floors typically click together without the need for glue or nails, making them faster and simpler to install. This lowers labour costs and minimises the time involved. If you get a problem with leakage for example, with a floating floor it’s easy to gain access to the substrate under the flooring, enabling it to be easily inspected and dried out. Glue-down floors require much more preparation, since several factors must be considered before installation begins. Even a minor mistake can lead to significant costs.
Another major advantage of floating floors is the flexibility they offer. Since these floors aren’t permanently affixed to the subfloor, they can be moved and reused. This is particularly relevant for retail and hospitality premises, where a change of usage or appearance may be required periodically. Additionally, floating floors can often be installed on top of existing floors, making them a versatile option. A glue-down floor might feel more solid, but the cushioning effect of a floating installation creates a softer feel underfoot.
Floating floors can also be a better solution in environments with varying temperatures and humidity levels. Since they’re not bonded with the subfloor, they can expand and contract naturally with humidity fluctuations.
