make customers feel more vulnerable to illnesses while also creating a bad impression.
People feel strongly about the washrooms they use when away from home – and many of us are unhappy with the standards we encounter. The 2025 Tork Insight Survey, published earlier this year, revealed that fewer than one in five away-from-home toilet facilities regularly meet our expectations. Top gripes include an unhygienic appearance, unpleasant smells and run-outs of soap, toilet paper or hand towels.
The study further revealed that many of us are prepared to take action when we feel unhappy with our washroom, experience. Around 30% of respondents said they would spend less time in a facility that had a poor washroom, while 23% have limited how much they eat and drink to avoid needing the washroom. However, a mere 17% would actually raise a complaint with the business in question, leaving them unaware of the potential impact.
So what can be done to ensure that washrooms are run efficiently – and safely – over Christmas?
In high-traffic washrooms with unpredictable flow patterns, cleaners and facility managers will have their work cut out to keep on top of the task. They will need to address messes and other issues as they occur, despite the fact that they are in a crowded area with little space to move. They will also need to keep a constant eye on soap and paper supplies because run- outs will result in dissatisfied users and longer queues.
Physically checking each dispenser is a mind-numbing task that prevents cleaners from carrying out other important jobs, such as cleaning taps, sinks and toilets.
This is where digital systems come into their own. Tork Vision Cleaning uses sensors placed in washrooms and dispensers to enable staff to check usage and refill levels via a phone or tablet. They can then target those washrooms where the cleaning needs are likely to be most urgent.
The fact that Tork Vision Cleaning allows targeted maintenance visits to be carried out means staff are able to address any issues before they can lead to complaints.
In busy washrooms it makes sense to provide high-capacity systems that will run out less frequently in the first place. Systems that give out only one sheet of toilet paper, shot of soap or hand towel at a time will have the benefit of naturally reducing consumption while also ensuring that each user only touches the product they use, which cuts the risk of cross-contamination.
Tork PeakServe Continuous Hand Towel works particularly well in this context because the high-capacity unit caters for over 1,000 washroom visitors between refills – 600 more than most other dispensers. The system will also dramatically reduce queueing because each user is supplied with a towel in just three seconds, allowing the user to take a towel and move on. Air dryers take around 10-12 seconds to dry the hands thoroughly – and the user is forced to remain rooted to the spot, potentially getting in the way of other washroom visitors and causing queues to form behind them.
A long-lasting soap supply that can be replenished quickly also works well in a busy washroom. For example, Tork

Foam Soap comes in cartridges that contain two and a half times the amount of soap housed in most liquid soap systems, which means the supply is less likely to run out between maintenance checks than rival products. The cartridge can also be changed in seconds when it does.
A long-lasting supply of toilet paper is essential during the busy Christmas period because it will reduce the risk of run-outs. Tork SmartOne has been designed to give out just one sheet of toilet tissue at a time, reducing consumption by up to 40%, which again helps to reduce the number of maintenance visits required.
Another good toilet tissue option for a busy venue is the Tork OptiServe Coreless 4-roll Toilet Roll System. Compared to conventional toilet paper, Tork OptiServe coreless rolls hold three times more paper and have no core and no wrap, creating much less waste. The four-roll dispenser has capacity to serve up to 290 guests.
Vandalism can be an issue in the busy washrooms of pubs and bars where people hold their Christmas drinks events. All dispensers should therefore be sturdy and lockable to reduce the risk of vandalism.
Malodours will have a negative impact on the customer’s impression of a washroom, so a good air freshener system will create a good impression and reassure users that the facilities are clean. The Tork Constant Air Freshener uses propellant-free technology to neutralise odours, and the fragrance lasts for up to 90 days before needing a refill.
“What can be
done to ensure that washrooms
are run efficiently – and safely – over Christmas?”
In the 2025 Tork Insight Survey, key reasons given for dissatisfaction with public toilets included queueing, overcrowding, unpleasant smells, out-of-order cubicles, a lack of cleanliness and the absence of soap, toilet paper and towels.
All these problems can be fixed by providing the right systems and by using digital technology to keep track of washroom needs. This will help to reduce crowds, raise satisfaction levels and ensure that everyone’s Christmas celebration goes with a swing.
