Here today, gone to Morrow

When a Cambridge University college reached out locally for a solution to ridding dining chairs of candlewax, St Ives independent contractor Luke Morrow leapt at the chance to apply some of the knowhow he had picked up from training with Prochem.

Luke completed a two-day Prochem carpet cleaning course at Chessington last year after returning to the UK from Australia. The former car mechanic, starting over again, had joined up with his carpet cleaner father to set up Aqua Bright.

Specialising in carpet and upholstery cleaning for both residential and commercial spaces, the duo has clocked up 10/10 ratings on Google and Checkatrade in Cambridge, Huntingdon, Bedford and the surrounding areas.

Luke was contacted by the College facilities manager to come and quote to clean 300 dining chairs. Used for corporate dining events, many of them were not only soiled but splattered with candlewax.

Luke said: “Apparently when guests were blowing out the candles, they were doing it rather violently, so the hot wax was getting splattered about.”

Luke and his dad set to, working predominantly with Prochem’s E840 Citrus Gel on the wax, gently working it in to help liquefy the oil residue before extracting. A solvent- based product, E840 Citrus Gel is effective at removing wax, grease, oil, tar, gum and many other solvent soluble spills. Luke applied it and then worked it in with a bone scraper helping to break down the wax.

For chairs unaffected by wax spills but still needing to be cleaned, Luke chose Prochem’s B108 Fabric Restorer as a pre-treatment, and then rinsed out with B109 Fibre and Fabric rinse using his trusty Bravo BV100 extraction machine.

Churchill bites the Green Apple

The Green Association has awarded Churchill four Green Apple Environment Awards.

The Awards are for its sustainable development and environmental improvement projects. Winners were celebrated at a ceremony in the House of Lords on 17 November 2025.

Churchill’s transformation of the Instant Group cleaning contract was recognised with a Sustainable Development – Innovation award, where 42 sites across the UK and Ireland were transitioned to a sustainable PVA cleaning range. The project achieved a 95% reduction in carbon emissions, eliminated single-use plastics entirely and increased plastic savings from 14% to 17%.

Its collaborative work with CBRE on its AtkinsRéalis contract was celebrated with a Sustainable Development – Innovation award. Its cleaning, hygiene and waste management solutions saved 260.11kg of plastic in 2024, reduced 2.6 tonnes of CO2

emissions and achieved a 78% cut in CO2 12 | WHAT’S NEW?

Luke reflected: “It took us a week but we got the job done and the FM was very pleased. We are now getting more work in the locale, including from other colleges on the back of the job.”

He feels that professional training from a high-profile provider is a real asset when it comes to marketing a cleaning business.

He added: “That course not only gave me knowledge but confidence. Training means you can trust that every job is done to the highest standard as we follow industry- approved cleaning methods and techniques.”

Using Prochem solutions predominantly, Aqua Bright services the region’s domestic market and aims to pick up more commercial work.

emissions from waste liners at its Birmingham site.

It also earned an Environmental Improvement – Land Regeneration award for its work at St. Marks Shopping Centre, where its on-site composting system provided a closed-loop solution for managing green waste. Since October 2023, the system has processed up to 3.5 tonnes of green waste and produced up to 1.5 tonnes of compost for reuse on site, saving the centre approximately £1,520 in disposal costs, while reducing carbon emissions linked to transport and external processing.

Churchill’s national Recycle Week initiative also won an Environmental Improvement – Partnership award for bringing together over 28 sites and 10 customer sites to collect 570kg of clothing donations that were heading to landfill. The project avoided 283kg of CO2

raised an estimated £2,800 for Emmaus UK, a charity supporting people transitioning out of homelessness.
