Clean Start inspires 450+ Bolton pupils
The Clean Start Initiative has delivered an inspiring multi- school presentation to more than 450 pupils from six Bolton-based primary schools.
The presentation aimed to transform young people’s perceptions of the cleaning industry and highlight the breadth of career opportunities available within the sector.
The special event brought together three industry leaders who shared their personal journeys and showcased the innovation, excitement and impact behind modern cleaning careers. Speakers included Daniel Cross, Marketing Manager at Tennant Company; Heather Downes, Head of Innovation at Mitie; and Jay Adderley, Operations Director at Clean Event Services.
Daniel captivated the audience with a live demonstration of two Tennant robotic cleaning machines, giving pupils the chance to see cutting-edge cleaning technology up close, and spoke about his career journey and the many benefits of working in the cleaning industry.
Heather gave an insightful and educational presentation on germs and the vital work of cleaning operatives. Making her presentation interactive, she also called upon a member of the teaching staff to join her on stage where she conducted an ATP test (a rapid method for verifying the cleanliness of a surface) on the teacher’s phone, delivering shocking results for the teacher but a humorous response from the pupils.
Jay shared stories from his team’s work supporting major sporting events including Formula One and the Grand National, and surprised the audience by bringing along the Olympic Torch from Wembley Stadium, allowing pupils to hold a piece of sporting history.

Throughout the session, the speakers emphasised how the cleaning industry plays a vital role in safety, hygiene, community wellbeing and national events. After the presentations, Jay led an interactive Q&A, moving through the audience with a microphone so pupils could ask their own questions and learn more about the careers that keep the UK’s public and private spaces running smoothly.
The Clean Start Initiative continues its mission to raise awareness of the cleaning industry among young people, showcase its social value and inspire the next generation of cleaning, facilities and technology professionals.
