A garden glow-up Kärcher brings sparkle to Horatio’s Garden as part of its 90th Anniversary give back project.
As part of their 90th anniversary celebrations, Kärcher UK has extended its community cleaning initiative to the inspiring Horatio’s Garden at Stoke Mandeville Hospital – a calming sanctuary designed to support patients with spinal injuries during rehabilitation.
Horatio’s Garden Stoke Mandeville, which opened in 2018 at the National Spinal Injuries Centre in Stoke Mandeville Hospital, features a transformative garden designed by celebrated designer Joe Swift, an RHS Chelsea Gold Medal Winner and BBC Gardeners’ World presenter, and beautiful garden room with an accessible kitchen designed by architect Andrew Wells.
This October, a team of eight Kärcher colleagues joined forces to give the garden room, greenhouse and garden a professional deep clean. Using Kärcher’s industry-leading machines, including the WV 2 window vac, NT 20/1 wet and dry vacuum, the BR 30/4 floor scrubber dryer, HDS 7/10 pressure washer, B 60 scrubber dryer and the FRV 30 ME hard surface cleaner, the team meticulously restored sparkle to the garden’s much-loved social and accessible gardening.
Tasks in the garden room included cleaning all glass and window surfaces inside and out, and tackling the tiled and resin flooring of the kitchen and dining area. To revitalise the greenhouse, the Kärcher volunteers cleaned the windows and floors, as well as the outdoor resin and patio areas – ensuring the garden continues to provide a welcoming environment for patients, volunteers and visitors alike.
As a result, the garden room now enjoys improved lighting from cleaner windows, and the outdoor space feels lighter and brighter – helped by the removal of ingrained dirt and discolouration from the resin floor.
The Kärcher team was warmly welcomed by Joanna Spencer, Patient Experience Manager, along with Assistant Gardener David and several of the dedicated volunteers who run the café and maintain the garden daily.

Joanna commented: “The Kärcher team worked tirelessly to clean our garden room, glass house and resin flooring. The end result is magnificent, and we have already received lovely comments from patients and staff regarding their work. Such a lovely group who remained cheerful in the face of drizzly weather.
“We are truly grateful for their hard work and generosity in providing us with the extendable window vacuum cleaners and the wet and dry vacuum. These items will be incredibly useful for the day-to-day running of the garden.”
The Horatio’s Garden project is one of nine community cleans taking place across the UK to mark Kärcher’s 90th anniversary. The initiative reflects the company’s ethos of giving back to local communities and improving shared spaces for everyone to enjoy.
Located close to Kärcher’s UK headquarters in Banbury, the Stoke Mandeville clean was a natural fit for the brand’s 90th anniversary initiative. Kärcher hopes this marks the beginning of an ongoing partnership with Horatio’s Garden, offering future support at Stoke Mandeville or one of the charity’s seven other UK sites.
One Kärcher volunteer commented: “I found this day very rewarding and an insightful way to learn more about the work Horatio’s Garden do, and why it’s so important for the patients to have a tranquil space to visit. The work we carried out brightened up the area and created a clean, safe and pleasant environment to be in – Joanna and the team were very appreciative of the work we did.”
