The fruits of OPL
Thea Cooper, Business Account Manager at Miele Professional, on improving laundry results and guest experience with commercial on-premise laundry.
Recently, our survey of 100 hotel workers revealed that cleanliness is a guest’s number one priority. That means that effective laundry processes should be at the heart of a hotel’s daily operations.
A bed linen stain won’t only negatively impact on a customer’s visit, it could also lead to negative online reviews exposing the bad experience, jeopardising the hotel’s future business success.
Common stains, including marks caused by make-up and food, make it a challenge to ensure that bed linen is thoroughly cleaned. That’s why it’s key to ensure that laundry equipment is high in quality to keep customer complaints to a minimum.
Delivering hygienic, quality results
76% of hotels we surveyed outsource laundry. As the hotel isn’t in control of the standard of laundry, it risks bed linen and towels not receiving a thorough enough wash.
To ensure high standards are met, and that the laundry process is as smooth as possible, hoteliers should roll out on-premise laundry (OPL). It can take up minimal room, ensure laundry is washed to a high standard and reassure the hotel that expensive items will not get lost in transit.
For example, Three Choirs Vineyard, which offers wine tasting as well as luxury accommodation and a restaurant, was not happy with its external laundry provider. Staff regularly had to replace items due to towels and bed linen getting lost, frequent mix ups, and laundry often being returned damaged or stained.
By installing an OPL and selecting equipment that it could rely on, Three Choirs Vineyard can now carry out laundry with greater care, without the need to worry about losing items.
The right equipment
When purchasing laundry equipment, there are a number of considerations hoteliers should take to reap the full benefits of OPL, such as the following:
• Hygiene standards: Compliance with Water Regulation Advisory Scheme (WRAS) category 5 is essential for hotels, even if they have an existing water supply. This ensures that soiled or contaminated water from the washer doesn’t enter the main supply.
• Turnaround speed: Laundry equipment that carries out short cycles, whilst still delivering effective results, allows hotels to turn around rooms quickly for new guests. For example, Miele’s Little Giants range can wash and dry 6.5kg of laundry in 85 minutes, and launder 1,500 towels per week.
• Durability: Initially, the cost of commercial laundry equipment could seem expensive. Thanks to its durability, however, it is a cost-effective option as it can withstand constant use over a number of years. Hoteliers should aim to buy from a brand that can promise longevity.
• Efficiency: Using water and energy efficient laundry equipment will show the hotel to be eco-friendly in its cleaning processes. Performance Plus requires up to 20% less water and 30% less energy than its previous generation, allowing hotels to be environmentally- friendly while still thoroughly cleaning items. Minimising energy and water costs will be an added bonus.
