In the run up to the Kimberly-Clark Professional Golden Service Awards 2020, the company looks at improving standards in the washroom.

As a leader in the washroom sector, the company set up the Golden Service Awards almost 30 years ago to recognise cleaning excellence and support the continual raising of standards. Today, the Awards have become one of the industry’s most esteemed and influential events, and an inspiring showcase for the very best in the industry.


The Kimberly-Clark Professional Golden Service Awards recognise the increasingly important role that facilities play in business success. Indeed, many organisations strategically invest in delivering the perfect office space, restaurant, hospital ward or shopping mall to optimise results, such as improved experience, improved hygiene or increased sales.


However, too often this focus does not include the washroom, which according to Kimberly-Clark Professional, means businesses miss out on a key opportunity for commercial success.


A missed opportunity?


The washroom is often underestimated. For example, in an average-sized office people visit the washroom three to four times a day, creating 1.1m annual opportunities to impress. As one of the most visited areas of a building, the washroom is often seen as a reflection of how the whole building is managed, and is one of the top three complaints made by office users.


Therefore, a poorly maintained washroom with low quality products can create an unhygienic, inefficient and overall bad experience. This in turn does not support goals of

increased productivity, health and wellbeing or indeed lead to increased sales.

For example, hand hygiene of both staff and visitors is critical in a healthcare or food production environment. 300,000 patients a year in England are affected by a Healthcare Associated Infection, costing £1bn annually, and a contamination event in a food processing company can run to millions in lost revenue.


3. Efficiency: Facility managers are tasked with managing budgets whilst constantly challenged with delivering more for less – and here is where efficient systems help.
