Waste not, want not
Samantha Stocks, Director at Simply Washrooms, discusses the environmental and financial implications of landfill space running out, and how the cleaning sector must find sustainable alternatives to deal with its hygiene waste.
Waste, and what we do with it, has always been a challenge. As the population grows and our consumption increases, managing waste can at times feel like a seemingly insurmountable challenge.
The UK produces more than 100m tonnes of waste every year. While much of the political debate centres

on municipal waste, we produce more than 78m tonnes of commercial and industrial waste a year – that’s nearly 80% of the total waste we generate.
Landfill has been the conventional method of waste disposal for decades. While we’re seeing a decrease in demand, partly due to growing environmental awareness and escalating costs, landfill space is rapidly running out. Recent studies suggest we could only have few years left before we completely run out of UK landfill capacity.
