With an ever-increasing choice of cleaning products, equipment and services to choose from, Joanne Gilliard, CEO of Jangro, argues that accreditations are key to quality.

The current market is awash with different products, equipment and services. From the sheer number of different cleaning applications, to innovations that digitise tasks or tackle the sector’s sustainability challenges, it’s fair to say that it can be an overwhelming choice for buyers.

It may be tempting therefore to select the cheapest options. However, results are everything in the cleaning game. Low quality products, equipment and services may fail to get the job done properly, leading to customer dissatisfaction, as well as wastage and over-use, and in worst case scenarios, put operatives at risk. When it comes to cleaning, quality and safety are paramount: there can be no compromise.

Wheat from the chaff

So how can customers be sure they are making the right decision when choosing cleaning supplies or services? There are myriad things to consider: for example, what is the difference between competitor products? Is that detergent really eco-friendly? Are the more expensive rubbish sacks really necessary when they will end up in the bin anyway?

Awards and accreditations are a good place to start when looking for products, equipment and services. They provide third party endorsement and offer independent assurance of their quality, claims, and health and safety.

What to look out for

Industry awards are a good marker of quality, so look out for products which have their stamps of approval, such as the Tomorrow’s Cleaning Award logo. There are other bodies too, which offer accreditations to give customers confidence in their purchasing decisions.

The Cleaning & Hygiene Suppliers Association (CHSA) runs accreditation schemes for distributors to ensure quality and reliability of products. Their scheme guarantees transparency and provides the assurance that every customer gets the exact quantity and quality of soft tissue products, cotton mops or plastic refuse sacks that they pay for. The buyer can be sure that ‘what’s on the box’ is the same as ‘what’s in the box’. What’s more, all CHSA accredited distributors, like Jangro, undergo random audits to check that standards are maintained.

Going green

Our waterways and landfill sites will thank you for choosing products that reduce the use of plastic or produce minimal (or zero) waste, but customers still need to be confident that their purchases are fit for purpose and effective. To help mitigate the risk of ‘greenwashing’ when choosing sustainable cleaning supplies, opt for those with the Wright Environmental Impact Rating (WEIR) stamp.

This system considers environmental issues during the selection process of raw materials, the manufacturing process, packaging and hazard classification of a product. This means that, as well as considering cleaning products containing less harmful chemicals, the system looks at the entire lifecycle and overall carbon footprint, and you can be sure you are purchasing the most sustainable product that's available.

Accredited training

The hallmarks of quality extend to services such as training schemes, too. Ensuring staff are well-skilled is particularly important in the cleaning industry – not only to provide the very best cleaning service possible, but to safeguard personal health and safety.

Jangro’s innovative training system, the Learning Management Solution (LMS) has recently been accredited by the CPD Certification Service. This endorsement offers customers the additional assurance that its training is relevant, of high quality and up to date.

A helping hand

A good distributor or supplier can help customers navigate the array of products and services available. Ultimately, if you want the job done effectively, efficiently and safely, you need to buy from companies that go out of their way to evaluate the quality of their offerings. So, choose one that does the leg- work for you – the very best have stringent standards in place, helping to relieve the burden from customers.
