10 QUESTIONS WITH... LUANNE MASON

Each month we ask a cleaning industry professional the Tomorrow’s Cleaning 10 Questions. This month, we chatted to Luanne Mason, FM Director at Oltec FM.

5

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I would promote training and support continual development of staff – employee engagement is crucial and something we should try to focus on to ensure cleaning staff are motivated and feel valued. I try to lead by example and spend as much time at sites meeting our staff as possible. Also, I think it’s important to keep up to date with innovation and always be open to finding better or more efficient ways of working.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB? My first role was a credit control clerk

at First National Bank in South Africa. When I started there it never occurred to me that I would end up in the cleaning or facilities management industry.

2

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE CLEANING INDUSTRY?

I started out in the industry selling washroom and hygiene equipment; one of my clients had a contract cleaning company and made me an offer to join their business. From there, I started my own small facilities management business in South Africa. I sold this business as a going concern when I moved my family to the UK and my career in the cleaning industry has gone from strength to strength from then on.

WHICH THREE WORDS DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY? Energetic, ambitious, committed.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD

YOU GO AND WHY? It would have to be South America because it has a mixture of good beaches, rainforest and a vibrant culture to explore.

IF AN INTERN WERE TO START TOMORROW, WHAT’S THE ONE

PIECE OF ADVICE YOU WOULD GIVE THEM? It’s a tough industry but if you work hard and go the extra mile it is very rewarding and your dedication will pay off.

IF YOU WON THE LOTTERY TOMORROW, HOW WOULD

YOU SPEND YOUR FORTUNE? I’ve always wanted to explore different countries so I would buy a yacht and set off to travel the world.

8

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY AND INVITE ANY THREE

PEOPLE, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE AND WHY? Richard Branson because he is inspiring and a brilliant businessman. Princess Diana as she reminds me of the importance of being kind and humble and Nelson Mandela, as he fought for a lot of good causes and as a South African he is very close to my heart.

9

WHAT, DO YOU THINK, IS THE FUTURE OF THE

CLEANING INDUSTRY? I think the future will be centered around adding value to cleaning services and reducing costs by having a ‘joined up’ approach to facilities management. This could be achieved either by multi-skilling our security employees and training them to clean or training cleaners, where possible, to work in dual roles undertaking security, general maintenance or light mechanical and engineering.

Roberto Berardi, Chairman of the European Tissue Symposium, asks:

WHAT WOULD YOU DO TO INCREASE THE AWARENESS

OF THE PUBLIC OF THE UNSURPASSED LEVEL OF HYGIENE OFFERED BY PAPER HAND TOWELS? Our staff continually undergo training to ensure they’re implementing the most up to date cleaning procedures at our partner sites nationwide. We are constantly in communication with partners across the country to inform them of the latest developments in hygiene and we work closely with them to ensure all members of the public understand the benefits of the systems we put in place.
