INDUSTRIAL CLEANING

As industry evolves, wiping and cleaning products are also evolving to fit today’s needs. Tork Low Lint Cleaning Cloths, for example, have been designed to cater for the changing market. The cloths come in an empty plastic bucket in which the operative pours their own cleaning agent. The wipes can then be used on surfaces without leaving behind lint.

Tork Low Lint Cleaning Cloths have proved popular in areas such as automotive bodyshops for pre-painting applications, and in the mechanical workshop for cleaning the optical sensors on lathes.

There are still a significant number of ‘dirty’ industries where traditional products are required. While there is a much greater reliance on electronics in the automotive industry, for example, there is still a need for oil and grease – and this needs to be cleaned away. Dirt is also a necessary by-product in mechanical workshops and in the metalworking sector.

Meanwhile, rags have also been evolving. An increasing number of firms now offer rags cut to a uniform size that are delivered in boxes, similarly to the way in which disposables are supplied. However, these come at a higher cost than mixed rags – and while they may all be the same size and shape, they will not necessarily be of the same thickness or absorbency.

Awareness of the benefits of disposables is growing. As industry changes, the wipes market will inevitably change with it and the demand for specialist products with low-linting, anti-static, tensile strength or enhanced absorbency properties will be on the increase.

But will industry ever lose its rag? Maybe not. There will always be a need for clothes made from textiles, after all, so these will probably continue to be recycled as rags for use in some areas. But as non- wovens become more sophisticated and industry becomes less about removing dirt and more about protecting delicate surfaces from damage, the demand for disposables will inevitably increase.
