NEW COALESCER FOR HYDROGEN PRODUCTION
International provider of filtration, separation and purification solutions, Pall Corporation, has launched an innovative liquid/gas coalescer designed to meet the increasing demand for efficient separation of electrolyte aerosols from gas in green hydrogen production processes. This process is likely to be used increasingly widely as hydrogen replaces fossil fuels within the power industry. Called Sepralyte, the product leverages
advanced technology that separates water or electrolyte aerosols (30% potassium hydroxide solution) from hydrogen, ensuring the purity of hydrogen produced during the electrolysis processes. Sepralyte has been designed to suit separation applications used within the power industry where minimal pressure drop is crucial for downstream processes. Greg Sears vice president of Pall’s fluid

INTERCONNECTOR LAUNCHED
In December 2023, the 1.4GW Viking Interconnector linking the GB and Western Denmark (DK1) electricity markets went live. The interconnector is currently the longest High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) interconnector in the world, measuring 765km. This is 45km longer than the connection from GB to the NO2 market area in Norway (which previously held the record). The first two months of the Viking
UK ‘ENERGY ZONES’ LAUNCHED In January 2024, the UK government pledged cheaper electricity
for those living near renewable energy projects. The proposals aim to provide incentives to developers of wind farms,
solar arrays and gas power plants to establish their facilities nearer to Britain’s larger towns and cities in a bid to better match regional energy supply and demand. Energy security and net-zero secretary Claire Coutinho’s zonal pricing
proposals will lead to electricity costs that vary regionally according to supply and demand. She estimated that the proposals would result in a ‘£45-per-year saving
in energy bills for the average British household. Continho’s department said: “These proposed changes will pass on the benefits of cheaper power to people across the UK by helping to reduce bills.” A consultation will take place in May.
ENEL UPGRADES ITALIAN SUBSTATION
Utility giant Enel has ordered 180 bespoke VD4/SFU vacuum circuit breakers from ABB Electrification to help upgrade its Italy-based MV primary substation switchgears to SF6 free technology by the end of 2024. The EPD certification for these breakers means the company can calculate KPIs and demonstrate its C02 impact and goals. Enel is one of just 125 companies worldwide that has validated its sustainability strategy according to the globally recognized, SBTi Corporate Net- Zero Standard, a decarbonization roadmap in line with limiting global warming to below 1.5°C. This is the most ambitious temperature target of the Paris Agreement adopted by the United Nations in 2015.

During this first phase of operation the link will operate at a maximum of 800 MW, lower than the expected 1400 MW. This cap has been introduced based on calculations and analyses for the capacity of current Danish electricity grid systems.
COSTAIN TO PROCEED WITH NEW UK PROJECT
Clean energy solutions provider, Costain, has won a two-year contract to deliver a project controls managed service across EDF’s eight UK nuclear power stations. The contract will see more than 150 specialists provide expert advice and support across the portfolio. As part of this contract, worth £15m
a year, Costain will continue to develop and grow EDF’s core project controls capabilities and provide specialist support to improve performance and deliver cost efficiencies. Costain is managing over 400

projects, all regulated by the Office for Nuclear Regulation. Leigh Wakefield, nuclear director at Costain welcomed the extension. He said: “Delivering solutions to some of the world’s most complex nuclear challenges, Costain has demonstrated commitment to safe and efficient nuclear operation as well as decommissioning. The work is critical to the continued operation of nuclear power stations as a zero-carbon source of electricity.”
