CONTENTS

Welcome

As you have probably gleaned from our cover and lead story Electrifying Off shore Turbines (page 26), this issue focuses heavily on wind as an energy source. As explained in Prepare for

Weather (page 32) the UK is the world leader in wind generating 11% of global supply. You can read about technology used to keep off shore turbines afl oat in A Buoyant Business on page 24, and discover innovative ways of transporting electricity between sea and shore on page 32. Renewables is, as ever, one of the

largest sections of the magazine, and Inspiration, Innovation (page 8) explores how the transition to green energy is leading to many innovative grass roots solutions. Twin technology is pretty

ubiquitous across the engineering industry, and Twins of Resilience (page 12) looks at how it can be used to predict and off set diff icult weather. Meanwhile, our nuclear article

(page 44) looks at how the energy source is shedding its problematic reputation, with the UK planning to ramp up capacity as it looks for fossil fuel alternatives. Peter Zornio, CTO of Emerson,

may have been speaking for the industry as a whole when he said that with the green transition well underway: “There’s never been a better time to be an engineer.” Manufacturers looking for a steer on how to reduce carbon in their business would do well to explore Emerson’s green targets and projects as outlined on page 28.

I hope you enjoy the issue!
