Modular cleanroom expansion supports biotechnology production growth
Womed, a biotechnology firm based at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in Montpellier, France, specialises in innovative solutions for women’s reproductive health. With a commitment to precision and quality in medical device production, the company required an expansion of its cleanroom facilities to accommodate increased manufacturing capacity.
In 2021, Monmouth Scientific installed an ISO 7 Modular Cleanroom for Womed. By 2024, rising production demands necessitated a large-scale upgrade while maintaining strict compliance with ISO 7 standards. The challenge was to complete the expansion within tight deadlines and budgetary constraints, ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
Monmouth Scientific delivered a seamless solution by leveraging the flexibility and scalability of modular cleanroom technology. The expansion involved increasing the cleanroom’s operational surface area and incorporating a changing atrium, which improved workflow efficiency and contamination control. Additionally, critical infrastructure enhancements were integrated to support the increased production requirements. These upgrades included the installation of an additional CAMT2000 unit and Terminal HEPA Filter to uphold ISO 7 cleanliness levels, alongside improvements such as coved skirting, exhaust grills, expanded flooring, a sliding door for better accessibility, and additional LED lighting panels to ensure optimal illumination.

Complex effl uent treatment plant installed at Pirbright Institute’s ISO11 building
Suncombe, a leading global supplier of hygienic process equipment and systems, played a leading role in the initial design, construction, implementation and commissioning of a new Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) for the ISO11 building at The Pirbright Institute in Surrey, UK. Pirbright is a world leading centre of excellence in research and surveillance of virus diseases of farm animals and viruses that spread from animals to humans.
The ISO11 building is used to conduct research into areas such as vaccine development, efficacy testing and viral transmission biology. The project was initiated to replace the existing ETP, which was very old and with outdated controls. Due to the lack of available space, it was decided to design an externally-sited structure, made of specially manufactured shipping containers. The client needed to keep the building running with the old ETP, and then programme a much shorter change over.
A benefit of building a containerised ETP was it allowed the equipment to be designed, manufactured, connected, installed and tested off-site and inclusion of all of the utilities and control systems in this single module. The Suncombe BioSuite Control Systems used have been specifically developed for ultimate control of these highly critical decontamination systems.
As a lot of the pipework was coming from inside the building, and controls cabling and interfaces were going back into the building coordination between the ETP construction and M&E contractors needed to be carefully managed.
Simulations of the various treatment cycles and stress testing of the complete system was undertaken. The plant was then installed on-site, and all the testing was then repeated in situ before handover.
