Sample Preparation & Processing
Advanced press technology accelerates polymer innovation at APT
Applied Polymer Technology (APT), part of the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest (TUS), has enhanced its polymer research capabilities with the addition of an advanced laboratory press. This cutting-edge equipment, supplied and installed by Intelicare, the exclusive UK and Ireland partner of Fontijne Presses, is set to strengthen APT’s role in polymer technology research and development. Known for its precision and reliability, the new press will play a critical role in the creation of innovative materials across a variety of industries.
APT provides specialised polymer technology solutions for Irish-based companies working in sectors such as MedTech, GreenTech, packaging, and sustainability. Focused on advancing global competitiveness, APT is committed to fostering the development of groundbreaking polymer products that support export growth and meet the evolving needs of high-value industries. Its work emphasises innovation, sustainability, and excellence in research.
The laboratory press combines compact design with high performance, making it ideal for small-scale sample preparation in research and development settings. It features advanced heating capabilities, allowing the platens to reach high temperatures for sample processing. The addition of active cooling and adaptable daylight configurations ensures operational efficiency, versatility, and enhanced sample processing accuracy. These features enable the creation of thin films used in various applications, including tensile and puncture testing, oxygen and
moisture transmission rate analyses, and optical clarity assessments, all without requiring expensive moulds.
Dr Declan Devine, Director of Polymer Research and Academic Director of APT, emphasised the press’s significance in advancing sustainable material development, particularly for packaging applications. He noted its importance in fast-tracking innovation within this space. Dr Declan Colbert, a Principal Investigator at the PRISM Research Institute, also praised the equipment for its exceptional capabilities in analysing high-performance polymers and biomaterials. He commended the technical and after-sales support provided by Intelicare and Fontijne Presses.
The new laboratory press represents a major step forward for APT, enhancing its ability to perform high-precision testing and sample preparation. Whether improving materials for medical use or developing sustainable composites, this addition reinforces APT’s position as a leader in polymer innovation and research excellence.
