Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy offers a fast and efficient alternative to traditional methods such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for quantifying cannabidiol (CBD) in cannabis oils. FTIR spectroscopy simplifies the process and provides rapid results with sufficient precision for routine quality control.
Using an Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) accessory, FTIR spectrometers measure the absorbance of specific infrared peaks that directly correlate with CBD content. ATR technology enables direct analysis of liquid samples, requiring minimal sample preparation as the oil can be applied directly onto the ATR crystal without dilution or additional chemical reagents. This reduces preparation time and eliminates the risk of introducing errors during sample handling. These measurements allow the creation of accurate calibration models covering a wide range of CBD concentrations, ensuring reproducible results for various cannabis oil samples.
The Lyza 7000 FTIR spectrometer from Anton Paar optimises the process for maximum efficiency. With its guided five-step quantification feature, the instrument simplifies workflows, making CBD analysis straightforward. Producers benefit from fast, consistent data generation without the need for extensive chemical reagents or complex preparatory steps.
This streamlined approach enables cannabis oil producers to verify product quality and consistency quickly and effectively.

Chromacity Ltd reports that the outstanding coupling efficiency and high stability of its Model 1040 ultrafast fibre laser enable the generation of exceptionally broad and flat supercontinua in the near-infrared region (750-1300 nm).
This compact and user-friendly laser provides an ideal solution for producing a cost-effective near- infrared supercontinuum by focusing ultrashort pulses into nonlinear materials, such as photonic crystal fibres. Unlike solid-state lasers, which typically produce beams with an elliptical cross- section, the Model 1040 laser outputs from a single- mode fibre, ensuring a perfectly symmetric beam that achieves coupling efficiencies exceeding 75% into photonic crystal fibres.
A technical note from Chromacity explores the implementation of supercontinuum generation in nonlinear fibres as a cost-effective method for producing broadband near-infrared light. This light source is well-suited for applications such as spectroscopy, optical coherence tomography, and CARS spectroscopy/microscopy.

63770pr@reply-direct.com Ultra-compact Czerny-Turner spectrometer
Bullet spectrometers from AP Technologies bring the sensitivity and resolution advantages of the classic Czerny-Turner cavity design but replace the conventional arrangement of separate collimator and focussing mirror with a single complex concave reflector design. The design of the Bullet series enables a significant reduction in the overall size of the spectrometer - as small as 36mm x 40mm x 25mm (~36cm³ ) including connectors and control board.
OtO are offering two versions of the Bullet design – ‘SilverBullet’ is based on a 1024-pixel CMOS sensor for 180nm to 1100nm performance whilst ‘RedBullet’ utilises a 128-pixel InGaAs sensor for 900-1700nm sensitivity. All Bullet series spectrometers are based on 8051 microcontrollers which allow for short integration time, fast readout, highly accurate trigger timing and low power consumption. Power and control is via USB with the addition of six I/O pins for connecting external devices.
As with all of OtO’s spectrometers the Bullet series spectrometers are supplied with their SpectraSmart spectral measurement software and a full Windows SDK. Example code for other operating systems is also available.
SilverBullet is currently offered with a choice of 11 gratings giving operating widths of 170nm to 820nm in 16 configurations with spectral ranges of 180-350nm up to 300-1100nm. A choice of 25µm, 50µm and 100µm slit width allows users to optimise sensitivity, with resolution from 1.7nm FWHM (180-350nm, 25µm slit) to <21.5nm (300-1100nm, 100µm).
RedBullet covers the range 900nm to 1700nm with a 50µm slit width giving resolution of <15nm FWHM across the full range. More information online:
