Laboratory Products 27 Analysis of Halogens in Foods - Application Report

Halogens are a group of reactive elements that play an important biochemical role in living organisms as there are some forms of elements such as Cl and I that are essential for humans, while others such as Br could be toxic and cause cell damage. This is the main reason why this group of elements has been extensively studied in food and biological materials.

The sample preparation step and subsequent determination of halogens by ICP is a challenging analytical task with problems related to analyte losses and contamination plus interference caused by residual carbon in digested solutions.

The Milestone UltraWAVE microwave digestion system from Analytix overcomes all the above and can complete a complete mineralisation of food samples using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and alkaline solution. Tests show that the ability to reach a digestion temperature of 250°C is crucial to obtain the proper quality of digestion and ensures a reliable analysis of halogens especially for Iodine. Other important advantages of this method are the formation of water as a product of digestion and the minimal memory effect of the analyses in ICP by the alkaline pH of the final solutions digested.

The system also offers a much simpler approach than other sample preparation techniques commonly used for this type of analysis and allows digestion of different samples with different sample weights using different media all in the same run so there is no need to batch samples of the same type into separate runs

Evaluate the Entire Analytical Process of the BCID2 Panel Assay for Sepsis

Fast detection of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes directly from positive blood cultures The BIOFIRE®

Blood Culture Identification 2 (BCID2) Panel rapidly detects pathogens and antimicrobial resistance genes, directly from positive blood

cultures, to shorten the time to optimal therapy for sepsis. To monitor accuracy and precision of the whole system the new Streck MDx-Chex™ Control is the first-of-its-kind quality control, specifically designed to meet the standards for verifying the entire analytical process of the BioFire BCID2 sepsis assay. It provides confidence in instrument results to ensure the best patient treatment decisions.

Now available in the UK from Alpha Laboratories, MDx-Chex evaluates the entire analytical process of the assay, including cell lysis, DNA extraction, purification and removal of PCR inhibitors, as well as qPCR amplification, detection and analysis.

MDx-Chex™ contains 43 bacteria, yeasts and antimicrobial resistance gene targets covering all those tested on the BIOFIRE BCID2 Panel. The intact,

inactivated microorganisms are suspended in a matrix of stabilised red and white blood cells, plus blood culture media components, designed to challenge the lysis and purification processes, just like a patient sample. Routine use of MDx-Chex for BCID2 as a full process quality control can help identify variations in the test system that can lead to incorrect results. It can be used as a 3rd party quality control to support ISO 15189 compliance.

57658pr@reply-direct.com ADVERTORIAL New Density Meter Series: Simple. Reliable. Precise.

Bellingham + Stanley is pleased to announce the arrival of the DSG Series Density Meters. Use of a density meter is commonplace throughout industry; from raw material testing to multiple instrument experiments within food, beverage, chemical, pharmaceutical and general industrial processes.

Comprised of two instruments with varying measurement accuracy, the DSG Series offers flexibility for your laboratory. The DSG40 has a density measurement accuracy to 4 decimal places, whilst the DSG50 offers a higher specification resolving to 5 decimal points (g/cm3

). The versatility of the DSG Series is evident

through its METHODS system, common throughout Bellingham + Stanley’s range of RFM refractometers and ADP Polarimeters. The METHODS system allows users to adapt to sample measurement with a collection of predetermined selections. DSG Series results can be expressed as Brix, % alcohol (w/w or v/v) as well as specific gravity (20/20 or 25/25) with the potential for even more application specific methods to be introduced over time.

The new instruments follow the same design philosophy of Bellingham + Stanley’s world renowned RFM refractometers and ADP polarimeters. Simple. Reliable. Precise.

The common design language used throughout Bellingham + Stanley’s high-quality engineering means that the DSG Series Density Meters not only sport a great touchscreen, but also fast networking abilities, USB functionality and more.

Users familiar with Bellingham + Stanley products will recognise how the simple, bright, 7” colour-coded touchscreen makes reading and configuration simple, even when wearing PPE gloves. Those new to the system will be blown away by the ease of use, whether that be during configuration or taking readings. For a more traditional method of operation and to aid accessibility, DSG Series Density Meters are fully operable with optional mouse and keyboard.

Peltier temperature control is used to ensure stablisation before analysis, whilst a powerful internal air pump, humidity sensor, and integrated desiccant means the DSG Series has no need for external devices for venting after cleaning, so your precious bench space isn’t taken up by needless peripherals.

Extensive reporting and security features within the instrument’s user-friendly menu ensures auditability and data integrity when choosing to incorporate the instrument into any laboratory operating in accordance with GLP or FDA regulation 21 CFR Part 11.
