26 New Technology to Increase Process Understanding
B&W Tek has introduced the PTRam™, a self-calibrating portable Raman system for process development applications. The 19-inch rack- mountable system features a 785 nm laser with long-term stability together with high-throughput optics. PTRam operates with Vison software, Metrohm’s proven spectroscopic software for real-time analysis, which includes instrument control and data analysis. The PTRam is self- monitoring, with self-calibration and system performance validation tests automated in the Vision software to ensure the validity of each measurement. The system testing provides a complete instrumental status diagnosis, including Raman shift accuracy and photometric precision as set forth in USP <858>.
The PTRam can aid in product and process development efforts in the chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries through the ability to increase process understanding with information-rich Raman spectral data. Predictive quantitative models can be created, or trend monitoring can be performed to reduce calibration development time before full process definition. The PTRam is a valuable analytical tool for reaction monitoring and kinetic studies, blending and mixing, fermentation monitoring, solvent exchange, tablet coating monitoring, and
other processes for real-time understanding of chemical and morphological changes as they occur. B&W Tek offers a full line of sampling probes and other accessories to optimise measurement for the systems being studied.

Round Bottom Microplate Maximises Sample Recovery
Deep well polypropylene microplates are commonly used for sample storage in life science laboratories. Polypropylene is an inert and heat resistant material, ideal for sample storage. However, not all grades of polypropylene are the same. For example, standard grades of polypropylene often have high concentrations of slip agents or plasticisers to aid the injection moulding process. This cost cutting exercise may aid rapid production of lower cost deep well plates, but risks compromising the integrity of your samples.
Porvair Sciences has added a new 1.2 ml Deep Well microplate, with round well bottoms for maximum sample recovery, to its family of 96-well square storage plates.
Manufactured from ultra-pure medical grade polypropylene, in a class 10,000 DNase/RNase-free cleanroom environment, the new plate offers high integrity storage of your samples at -80?C even over extended periods of time.
Each Porvair Sciences 96-well square storage plate offers a highly uniform working volume of 1 ml per well. The new plate design incorporates features that ensures easy and reliable stacking. Precisely manufactured to ANSI/SLAS dimensions ensures that these deep well storage plates completely automation compatible.
This new high-quality deep well plate has raised well rims to facilitate reliable heat seal closure, critical for long-term integrity of stored samples at -80°C. Used in conjunction with a support mat, Porvair’s new 1.2 ml square storage plates can be centrifuged at up to 6000 x g. More information online:

Digital Microscope Camera for Standard Brightfield Imaging
The LC35 microscope camera makes capturing quality brightfield images affordable. With a 3.5-megapixel CMOS sensor and versatile exposure times and resolution modes, the camera’s provides quality brightfield images in a cost-effective package.
Flexible for use with a wide range of samples under different observation conditions, the LC35 camera delivers the detail needed for routine imaging, inspection and documentation. The frame rate of up to 40 frames per second (fps) makes navigating around the sample fast to achieve precise focusing and fast image capture.
The camera integrates seamlessly with Olympus life science and industrial imaging systems, including full microscope set up assistance, software support and optical compatibility. For basic imaging and documentation, customers can use the free LCmicro software, while advanced image analysis is possible using cellSens™ software for life science and Olympus Stream™ and PRECiV™ software for industrial applications.
Installing the camera is simple - a single USB 3.1 cord provides power and a fast connection to your PC or laptop. The camera easily mounts to any light
microscope using different C-mount adaptors. Using the camera is just as easy. With only a little training, operators can use the camera to its full potential, including interactive measurements, commenting on images, archiving and creating reports.

Fast, Accurate Water Activity Measurement for Food and Pharma Applications
The latest Series 4TE instrument from Labcell the exclusive UK distributor of Aqualab water activity analysers, is an accurate, quick, simple and cost-effective way for food manufacturing and pharmaceutical companies to gain valuable information about gels, powders, pastes and tablets. New for customers is a live-demonstration service so that potential users can see the product in practice while talking to the key technical team - securely and confidentially. By using a video conferencing facility and using samples of your products, Labcell is able to offer a truly bespoke trial of the Aqualab 4TE
The AquaLab Series 4TE produces accurate measurements of the water activity in active ingredients, excipients and formulations. The easy-to-use instrument enables lab- quality measurements of water activity to be made in the production environment. It is suitable for use by formulation and research and development teams, as well as those working on new packaging designs.
A feature of the AquaLab Series 4TE is temperature equilibration allowing users to set the sample temperature to anything from 15 to 50oC; the analyser then maintains that temperature throughout the test. The instrument has a measurement range of 0.030 to 1.000 aw, an accuracy of +/-0.003 aw and a repeatability of +/-0.001 aw.
Users in the food manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries will appreciate the way in which the AquaLab Series 4TE handles data with a strong emphasis on traceability. Data is captured on the instrument and cannot easily be deleted; it can also be downloaded to a computer for archiving and more detailed analysis. Up to 8,000 data points can be stored securely on the AquaLab and the date, time and operator is logged for every measurement and calibration.
Labcell also supplies the AquaLab Series 4TEV which is identical to the Series 4TE in most respects yet benefits from an additional hygroscopic polymer capacitance sensor for analysing samples containing volatiles. Users can switch between this sensor and the standard dewpoint sensor via the instrument’s front panel menu. Accuracy with the volatiles sensor is +/-0.015 aw.
