Mass Spectrometry & Spectroscopy 11 Enhancing SPR instrument performance
Biotech Fluidics AB has announced its partnership with BioNavis Oy, wherein it will provide essential microfl uidic and degassing components for BioNavis Oy’s Multi-Parametric Surface Plasmon Resonance (MP-SPR) instruments.
Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) has emerged as the primary technique for measuring molecular interactions in various fl uidic environments, including serum, saliva, and organic solvents. Its label-free nature eliminates the need for labelling molecules, making it a highly advantageous method for evaluating affi nity and kinetics of binding reactions. With the BioNavis Navi™ range of advanced Multi-Parametric Surface Plasmon Resonance (MP- SPR) instruments, researchers gain access to exceptional features and performance that enable in-depth studies of surface interactions and nanolayer characterisation.
The Navi MP-SPR instruments provided by BioNavis facilitate crucial scientifi c investigations, such as antibody characterisation, exploration of drug uptake pathways, controlled drug release strategies, precise measurements of small molecules, targeted delivery of nanoparticles, and even drug internalisation by living cells.
Jussi Tuppurainen, Technical Director of BioNavis commented: “The key part of our MP-SPR fl uidics systems are IDEX port selection valves supplied by Biotech Fluidics. These high-quality valves contribute to precise handling of samples, allowing researchers to control the timing, volume, and fl ow rate of injected liquids. This precision is vital for achieving reproducible results and minimising variations in sample concentration. Additionally, the Degasser system supplied by Biotech Fluidics helps maintain sample integrity by preventing the introduction of air bubbles, which can disrupt measurements. Careful fl uidic design and effi cient degassing techniques eliminate bubbles and preserve the stability of the sample, ensuring reliable data.”
In conclusion, Jussi Tuppurainen said: “BioNavis has been a satisfi ed customer of Biotech Fluidics for many years. We highly recommend them not only for their top-quality products, but also because of the consistently professional and friendly customer service they provide.”

Single-cell picker for mass spectrometric analysis of single cells
iotaSciences, the Oxford-based leader in the rapidly growing fi eld of single-cell handling solutions, announced today the fi rst encouraging data for the use of its recently launched single-cell picking instrumentation isoPick™ based on the company´s proprietary fl uid-shaping technology. In a collaboration with SEISMIC at the University of Surrey, the isoPick™ has been evaluated for single-cell sampling for subsequent analysis by mass spectrometry. Notably, the isoPick™ came out strongly against several aspects related to ease of use, portability and automation. The results of the evaluation study were presented as a poster presentation at the British Mass Spectrometry Society (BMSS) annual meeting in Manchester from 12- 14 September 2023.
Professor Melanie Bailey from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Surrey said: “We have been pleased with the recent comparative performance of the isoPick™ instrument in our attempt to develop methods for mass spectrometry-based analysis of single cells. We look forward to further collaboration with iotaSciences while we develop a facility for single-cell and sub-cellular “omics” and to support UK academics and industry researchers working in BBSRC (Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council) remit areas.”
IotaSciences’ Chief Product Offi cer Alexander Feuerborn commented: “We are extremely excited about this fi rst encouraging set of data for the isoPick™ instrument for mass spectrometric analysis of single cells. These results strongly confi rm our original intentions to introduce a high-quality, precise and robust single-cell picking instrument with an easy-to-use end-to-end solution for verifi able isolation and subsequent analysis of single cells. For us, this clearly opens the wider application space in the fi elds of single-cell proteomics and lipidomics.”

Why a Reference with a Calibration Certifi cate
is not Necessarily a CRM Instrument qualifi cation using CRMs from an appropriately accredited supplier is the fi rst step towards data integrity. Indeed, the choice of CRM supplier is as important as the choice of CRM.
A laboratory performing measurements over a wide wavelength or photometric range will likely require several different CRMs to cover each instrument parameter.
According to ISO, a fully accredited CRM supplier should be accredited to both ISO 17034:2016 and ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Standards.
In 2001, Starna Scientifi c became the fi rst company worldwide to achieve ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for the calibration of liquid and glass CRMs for UV-visible spectrophotometry, and in 2006, the company became the fi rst and only supplier of spectrophotometry references accredited to both standards.
All Starna’s CRMs are supplied with a certifi cate showing the traceability of the certifi ed value to Standard Reference Materials (SRM) and a statement of the measurement uncertainty, as required by the ISO defi nition of a CRM.
Starna Scientifi c are committed to the process of continuous improvement demanded by those standards and look forward to another 20 years as the preferred supplier to many of the leading pharmaceutical companies, instrument manufacturers and accredited laboratories worldwide.
