Laboratory Products 37 Enhancing Flow Chemistry with CSTR Cascade Integration

Vapourtec has unveiled a new continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR) designed to enhance continuous process synthesis, offering compatibility with their renowned fl ow chemistry systems. This innovative CSTR can be integrated into R-Series and E-Series fl ow chemistry platforms, signifi cantly expanding their capabilities.

The CSTR cascade system allows for the integration of up to eight reactors within an R-Series fl ow chemistry system, such as two R4 modules, making it ideal for managing fl ow reactions that involve both solids and liquids. It operates at pressures of up to 5.0 bar and provides a reactor volume range from 5 ml to 40 ml, with precise temperature control from -10°C to +150°C.

For the entry-level E-Series fl ow chemistry system, the option to include up to two CSTRs is available, offering enhanced versatility in this system. This easily maintainable system prioritises safety and precision, offering stirring speeds ranging from 100rpm to 1200rpm and featuring a built-in burst disc, with an optional protective screen for added safety.

Additionally, Vapourtec provides the choice of incorporating a photochemical CSTR, which uses LED light sources spanning from 365nm to 700nm. The design of the CSTR is a result of close collaboration with leading fl ow chemists from both industry and academia.

Dr. Manuel Nuño of Vapourtec emphasized the innovative approach, stating: “CSTRs have a well-established presence in chemical synthesis, but our goal was to adapt and optimise them for fl ow chemistry, ensuring seamless integration with our continuous process systems. The ability to create an eight-reactor cascade confi guration signifi cantly improves residence time distribution (RTD) control, allowing for the separation of reaction products from starting materials and precise management of RTDs. With tailored settings for stirring speeds and temperatures in each individual CSTR, this system provides enhanced control and accuracy, leading to more precise outcomes.”

Established in 2003 and headquartered near Cambridge, UK, Vapourtec’s fl ow chemistry systems have played a pivotal role in the development of novel synthetic pathways for critical therapeutics, including drugs such as Tamoxifen for breast cancer, Artemisinin for malaria treatment, and peptide drugs for type 2 diabetes management.

Compact Dry Scroll Pump Expands Vacuum Choices

IR Hotplate/Stirrer Delivers Superior Heating and Mixing

The latest infrared heating technology has been used in the design of the WH280-NH hotplate-stirrer from Wiggens. Thanks to this radiation heating technology, the Wiggens WH280-NH can be used for rapid heating up of various shaped vessels, including round-bottom fl asks, and the solution inside can be heated up to a maximum of 450°C in a very short time.

The new Wiggens hotplate stirrer enjoys the benefi ts of a Schott glass ceramic surface with exceptional chemical resistance, a high surface quality, and a resistance to temperature shocks of more than 700°C, providing users with an optimal solution compared to conventional heating surface materials. The poreless smooth surface enables even the most stubborn dirt to be easily cleaned. The high infrared permeability ensures that the heating energy is transferred quickly and with very limited loss, therefore, it heats liquids fast and saves time and energy. Intelligent Cascade Control enables self-optimising to reach perfect temperature stability. If the Pt-100 sensor is connected, temperature-controlled work with stability of +/- 2°C can be reached in most applications.

In addition to rapid heating capability and superior temperature control, the WH280-NH also offers well controlled gentle to intense mixing of liquids, and is also suitable for large volume viscous media.

Edwards has expanded its dry scroll pump series with the introduction of the mXDS3, a compact, lightweight pump delivering exceptional dry pumping performance. With a pumping speed of 3m³/h, this addition complements Edwards’ current range of small dry pumps, which encompasses the nXDS scroll pump series, spanning from 3 to 120m³/h.

The mXDS3 serves as a sustainable alternative to traditional oil-sealed rotary vane pumps, eliminating the need for oil maintenance, replacement, or disposal. These scroll pumps are not only eco- friendly but also feature lower power consumption compared to pumps with similar capacities.

In addition to its environmental advantages, the mXDS3 has an impressive ultimate vacuum performance of 0.1mbar, making it ideal for supporting turbomolecular pumps. Edwards offers the mXDS3 in both standard and confi gured versions, the mXDS3s, which includes a built-in inlet valve, providing fl exibility for end users, OEMs, and system builders.

Edwards Product Manager, David Goodwin said: “I am delighted to introduce this new small dry pump which is a great addition to our scroll pump portfolio. This gives us the opportunity to provide our customers more choice and fi lls a gap in the diverse range of products we offer.”

The stirring and heating can be controlled separately by convenient turning knobs. All functions can be viewed and monitored on a bright touch screen, including most frequently used parameters, such as, working temperature, stirring speed, working time, and safety temperature. Memory function for stirring speed and temperature setting makes it convenient to start the experiments with fi xed conditions. A residual-heat display protects the users from burning their hands.

With the aforementioned benefi ts, and many other features, the Wiggens hotplate stirrer is the optimal solution for heating and mixing of liquids in labs, for gentle to intense applications.
