The British Society of Scientific Glassblowers Celebrates Fifty Years of the Journal.
The British Society of Scientific Glassblowers, (BSSG) exist to uphold and further the status of scientific glassblowers and currently has over one hundred and fifty members who are either actively employed as scientific glassblowers or who share the objectives of the Society. Membership is worldwide and as many work for commercial businesses as they do for universities. The BSSG started life in 1960 and four years later the “Journal” was born. Published four times a year it is one of the few publications devoted to scientific glassblowing in the world and is currently overseen by Ian Pearson who took up the editor’s role in 1985. “I enjoy the challenge of entertaining the readers through a mixture of technical articles, new developments and Society news. The BSSG is a voluntary organisation and hence fully dependent on membership fees, sponsorship and Journal advertising”, he explained.

Readers of the first edition would have come across industry names such The EXE Engineering Co Lt; W.S.A. Engineering Co. Ltd; G. Springham & Co. Ltd; Catterson-Smith Ltd; Jencons; A.D.Wood (London) Ltd; the Lightpath Optical Co. Ltd; Quadrant; Plowden and Thompson, Joblings; Diagrit; Thermal Syndicate ltd; Quickfit and Quartz Ltd; to name but a few. During the fifty years of the Journal many companies have ceased trading or been absorbed by others; scientific glassblowing has also shared these massive changes and the demand for high quality specialised glassware now integrated within larger electronic laboratory machinery reflects this. The links between the BSSG Journal and others such as Labmate are vital to ensure scientific glassblowers stay informed of new developments in the laboratory supply market place. Acknowledging the commercial influences on this sector, the BSSG have several corporate members.
The BSSG offer students a programme of gaining qualifications through various routes and awards. In 2011 at a special ceremony several BSSG Members were awarded Fellowship status by virtue of their experience, knowledge and participation in Society business. In addition annual competitions are organised with trophies and certificates being awarded each year at the BSSG Symposium. The next one will take place in Edinburgh at the Capital Hotel, 4th – 6th September where there will be special celebrations for the BSSG Journal’s golden jubilee.
