UK Company Ensures Safety of Purified Water for Production in China’s National Vaccine Production Base

UV disinfection specialist Hanovia has supplied three UV water disinfection systems to the Institute of Medical Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Kunming. The PharmaLine PQL units destroy any unwanted microorganism in the purified water used in the production of vaccines. Moreover, these systems can display the verified ultraviolet irradiation dose online, further reducing the risk of microbial contamination.

The Institute of Medical Biology is the largest oral, anti-poliomyelitis vaccine production base in China. Since the 1960s it has produced over 5 billion vaccines for the National Planned Child Immunization programme in China. It is also the largest Chinese base for the development of Hepatitis A vaccines.

Because the Institute has always had very strict quality controls of its production process, when a new production facility was built in 2013 the Institute opted for Hanovia’s PharmaLine PQL UV technology.

Commenting on the Hanovia equipment, Shen Feng, the senior engineer and water treatment equipment expert at the Institute, said, “Compared with other UV disinfection systems, Hanovia’s PharmaLine PQL offers validated disinfection that has been certified by an independent third party. It also displays the UV dose online, meeting the stringent requirements of the pharmaceutical industry for verification and risk management.”

Purified Water has had almost all electrolytes removed, making it as inert as possible. The removal of any potential microbial contamination is of course also vital. Purified Water is an essential raw material for the production of vaccines and indicators (TOC, bacterial endotoxins, microorganisms, pH and conductivity) are strictly required in the pharmacopeia of many countries. Of these indicators, all but microorganisms and bacterial endotoxins can be controlled by water preparation technology.

UV kills 99.9% of the microorganisms, ensuring the concentration in purified water remains at an extremely low level (≤5cfu/ml). UV also does not produce any unwanted disinfection by-products that might contaminate the purified water downstream.

30976pr@reply-direct.com ISO 15189 Made Easier

Laboratories looking to implement the new ISO 15189 standards for UKAS accreditation will have to demonstrate that their testing service follows defined quality assurance levels, performing with competence and consistency. That means removing risks of variability wherever possible. Control materials that follow the patient pathway can assist with this by providing greater confidence in test system results, over controls that use artificial materials, or that do not enumerate accurately over a number of parameters.

Streck controls, available exclusively from Alpha Laboratories Ltd, do exactly that. They contain true cellular material that undergoes the same procedural conditions as a patient sample. Available for numerous analytes each control provides at least two clinically relevant ranges. Whether you need haematology controls, are testing a urine sample on an automated microscopy system, or running samples through a flow cytometry system, Streck has a control for you that will mirror the treatment of your patient samples.

Similarly the Alpha Labs range of PrecisionBioLogic products for haemostasis brings convenience, efficiency and quality with ready-to-use frozen format controls, reference plasmas and assays. The buffered, frozen products ensure consistency vial to vial and prevent reconstitution errors. Every lot has an assay certificate providing full traceability and the long shelf life saves time by reducing the frequency of standardisation between lot changes.

30493pr@reply-direct.com ADVERTORIAL Total Nitrosamines Analysis System

In certain production processes such as those in cosmetics or agricultural pesticides industries, it is important to analyse for the presence of Nitrosamines, but it is not all ways essential to know the exact profile of the nitrosamine species.

The Ellutia Chemical Stripping System has been developed to be used in unison with an 800 Series TEA to perform total nitrosamine analysis. Instead of using a pyrolyser to heat the nitrosamine to remove the NO group, a chemical reaction can be employed. The alleviation of NO from the nitrosamine is performed by a reflux reaction with hydrobromic acid in ethyl acetate. The nitrosamine sample is injected into the reaction vessel and produces NO, a secondary amine and bromine. The NO is then carried in a gas stream through a cold trap (removing any vapour) to the TEA

Gas Pipeline Permeation Analyser

High-pressure pipelines are used for transporting oil and gas. It is important to test the permeation of the materials used to manufacture the pipelines for a number of reasons. Firstly it is essential to test what levels compounds from the oil or gas to be transported through the pipeline permeate through the material. This helps to ensure that potential product loss and that ground contamination is kept to a minimum. It is also possible to monitor the degradation of the pipe material overtime to help ensure life expectancy of the material.

Ellutia has designed a system to perform this analysis consisting of the following main items:

- A 200 Series Gas Chromatograph (GC) fitted with Catalytic Converter (CC)/ Flame Ionisation Detector (FID) and Flame Photometric Detector (FPD)

- An automatic 6 position Gas Sampling Valve, installed in the GC Column Oven - An automatic 8 position Stream Selection Valve (only 4 positions currently used) - 4 Mass Flow Controller units (MFC) for controlling of sample gas flow (air) to customers membrane cell

The flow of ‘sample air’ to each cell is controlled by a mass flow controller and passes over the membrane to take up any of the sample gas being tested. Each cell under test is continuously purged with air and flows to the Stream Selection Valve and hence to the Gas Sampling Valve and flushes the sample loop. At the start of the analysis, the sample in the loop is injected on to the GC and the sample gas analysed. Sulfinert tubing and/or Hastelloy C material is used wherever the sample is in contact to minimise sample adsorption.
