Sample Preparation & Processing New Centrifuge Range Covers all Applications and Budgets

A new range of compact, bench-top centrifuges which are ideally suited to most essential applications in life-science laboratories such as haematology, biochemistry, chemistry, biotechnology, have been introduced by laboratory equipment specialists Medline Scientific.

The models available are designed to suit all applications and budgets and include the important features and benefits of a robust sealed housing, fully programmable microprocessor control, smooth, brushless motors and near silent running. They are also fitted with a lid lock to prevent accidental opening during operation, while the inner bowl is a self-contained unit designed for easy wipe-down and disinfection should a breakage or spillage occur during operation.

The entry level MC-5000 model is a low-speed (max 5000 rpm) option which is available with or without a ‘load auto-balance’ function and is ideal for qualitative analysis of blood serum, plasma and urea in hospitals, blood centres and biochemistry labs. At the other end of the scale is the more sophisticated MC16000R model which is ideal for most molecular biological laboratories for use on cell separation and DNA applications. This is a high speed variant (16000 rpm) and includes selectable refrigeration.

Bucket options vary depending on the tube size and combinations to be spun. These range from 24 capillary blood tubes (Model MC-12000) up to 8 x 50ml tubes (Model MC-5000) with many intermediate options.

The rotor arms are either fixed angle or swing out, depending on the model. However, easily-fitted rotor arm sets are available for different functions if required. Circle no. 591

New Standards Set in Ultrafiltration

Reliable PCR Results with Complete Format Flexibility

With its highly versatile interchangeable blocks that allow you to use a complete range of consumables, the Bioer GenePro from Alpha Laboratories has been a popular thermal cycler for many years. Now its successor brings additional technology and functionality, for even greater ease of use and exceptional performance, alongside the format flexibility.

The new GeneTouch has a 6.5 inch full colour touchscreen menu and display. Together with the intuitive menu, this enables programming of complex protocols such as Touchdown, Long and Nested PCR in just a few seconds.

The hot-lid is adjustable making it suitable for use with a variety of PCR consumables. Research pathways often change over time, requiring new assays and analysis techniques. Investing in a PCR machine with maximum flexibility can make adapting to these changes easier. With the GeneTouch Interchangeable Thermal Cycling System, upgrading vessel type and thermal functionality is simple and inexpensive.

Sartorius is introducing a new generation of

ultrafiltration devices to the market. The disposable Vivaspin Turbo 15 is optimally suited for protein, virus or nanoparticle concentration as well as desalting, dialysis and buffer exchange. It is available in a range of volumes from 4 to 15ml and permits easy and complete recovery of the concentrate, yet is the fastest ultrafiltration device on the market.

With Vivaspin Turbo 15, lab technicians can concentrate biological samples within 10 to 30 minutes and obtain macromolecular recoveries of more than 95%. In a single spin, 15ml solutions can be concentrated up to 150 times. High flow rates are achieved due to the twin vertical membranes, which minimise protein polarisation and subsequent fouling of the membrane. The optimised design and sleek internal profile of Vivaspin Turbo 15 ensures

maximum process speeds down to the last few microlitres.

The 100-microlitre dead stop pocket is easy to access with standard 200-microlitre pipette tips due to the patent pending angular design of Vivaspin Turbo 15. It eliminates the risk of the sample running to dryness while allowing highest recovery of the concentrate.

The use of highly chemically resistant plastic materials, such as polystyrene and polypropylene, guarantee a stable shelf life, even in humid environments. Polyethersulphone membranes are preferred for their low fouling characteristics, exceptional flux and broad pH compatibility. The combination of polyethersulphone, polystyrene and polypropylene enables Vivaspin Turbo 15 units to be readily sterilised and depyrogenated.

You can be assured of reliability and reproducibility of your PCR results with the GeneTouch. Its upgraded Peltier elements and unique thermal assisted switching minimise edge effects and provide uniform heating and cooling right across the block. Extremely quiet when running, it can be operated on its own, via a PC or on a network.

Next Generation High-Speed Centrifuge Simplifies Performance

The new Thermo Scientific Sorvall LYNX superspeed centrifuge series incorporates exclusive innovations – Auto-Lock rotor exchange and Auto-ID instant rotor identification – to deliver productivity, safety and reliability and maximise everyday centrifuge use in shared laboratory settings.

The Thermo Scientific Sorvall LYNX centrifuge features a 100,000 x g top speed performance and supports high-throughput sample processing from 50mL conical tubes and microplates to 1L bottles, up to a six-litre capacity, meeting the evolving needs of academic research and production facilities alike. Run set-up is easy with the intuitive touchscreen interface featuring a bright, highly visible and durable display, while on-board video tutorials and access controls, such as user login with password protection, provide advanced training and programming options.

“Today’s researchers require centrifuge performance that is simplified, to accommodate the reality that labs have multiple users with different experience levels and a variety of processing requirements,” said Maurizio Merli, Global Product Director, Centrifugation, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “Our new Sorvall LYNX superspeed centrifuges dramatically simplify high-speed centrifuges while increasing user safety and peace of mind. We accomplish this with breakthrough technology advancements, such as the Auto-Lock rotor exchange, Auto-ID instant rotor identification and carbon fibre rotors.”

The Sorvall®

LYNX superspeed centrifuge series features built-in safety and rotor technology innovations that shorten run set-up time and increase security, including: secure, push-button Auto-Lock®

rotor exchange in less than 3 seconds, ensures that the

rotor is automatically and securely locked and will not loosen during a run, enhancing user confidence; Auto-ID®

instant rotor identification recognises a rotor when secured in

the chamber, improving safety, saving time, and protecting the integrity of your samples; lightweight, corrosion-resistant Fiberlite®

carbon fibre rotors, including the new Fiberlite

LEX designs, improve ergonomics and performance; rotor lids for microbiological containment, certified by the Public Health Laboratory Service, Porton Down, UK; latest in global safety compliance without the need to bold down the instrument to the floor, simplifying installation and providing flexibility to relocate.
