Radioactive Services


Detectors such as Ion Mobility Detectors or ECDs (Electron Capture Detector) found in gas chromatographs contain a Ni-63 radioactive source and so are controlled by legislation. Ellutia Ltd is licensed to provide a range of services designed to help users of these devices remain within the law.


Leak Testing


It is a legal requirement that the detectors are ‘leak tested’ to detect radioactive contamination of the surface at intervals of between one and three years depending upon local regulations. Ellutia supply a convenient wipe test kit containing full instructions and materials to perform the test. The test samples are then sent to Ellutia for analysis and report.


ECD Refurbishment


ECDs can be contaminated by dirty samples and require refurbishing, the legal requirements mean that this must only be carried out by suitably qualified personnel in a registered laboratory. This refurbishment is another of the services Ellutia can offer.


Radioactive Source Disposal

On–Line Chlorine Analyser


The production of bleach requires Chlorine, which is manufactured by the process of electrolysis. It is important to analyse the quality of the Chlorine gas to ensure that the electrolysis process is efficient with respect to time, therefore not wasting electricity and to ensure there are no leaks between the membranes. By analysing the impurities Hydrogen, Oxygen, Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide in Chlorine gas will indicate the efficiency of the process and any leakage.


Ellutia have developed a customised version of the 200 Series GC with Multi Dimensional Chromatographic channels each with a TCD to perform this analysis. Channel A is for the analysis of Hydrogen in the range 0.01 to 0.5% vol. using Argon carrier gas. Channel B is for the analysis of Oxygen, Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide in the range 0.01 to 3% vol. using Helium carrier gas.


Special Hastelloy valves, pipework and columns have been installed to reduce corrosion by the sample. Multi Dimensional Chromatography techniques are employed to ensure the Chlorine matrix gas does not reach the TCD. With the added heated Naffion dryer installed in the sample line (to remove moisture thus reducing potential corrosion) the analyser can be placed ‘on-line’.

OPTIC-4 Multimode Inlet for GC Available from Ellutia


Ellutia are pleased to be able to offer the OPTIC-4 multimode Inlet for GC from ATAS GL. The Optic-4 has a range of features and solution that are not found in any other GC inlet. The patented low thermal mass design of the inlet body together with direct resistive heating provide fast linear temperature programming up to 600°C at rates as high as 60°C/s.


In addition to standard sampling modes, the programmable inlet can operate effectively as Large Volume Injection, Pyrolysis or Thermal Desorption sample introduction device. With the options for sub-ambient cooling, backflush, cryogenic trapping and automated liner exchange, OPTIC-4 is the world’s most versatile inlet for gas chromatography.


With the OPTIC-4, a user can introduce a wide range of samples to their GC including those containing high matrix or thermally labile compounds. The samples can also be water based or solid. Automated solvent venting procedure based on the standard solvent sensor in the split line makes large volume injections as easy as the industry standard split or splitless.


The OPTIC-4 inlet is designed to be installed on any GC make. The inlet and its control are also compatible with most makes of autosampler available on the market.

Ellutia Ltd are pleased to announce they are now able to offer the GC Racer and GC Chaser to its UK customers. These exciting GC accessories can speed up analysis cycle times, increasing throughput and productivity of your lab.


The GC Racer is a Fast Temperature Programmer. It overcomes the power limitations of conventional GC ovens by adding a second convection heater to the oven. The GC Racer is controlled by the “host” GC and can boost ramp rates up to 120°C/min.


The GC Chaser is a Fast Oven Cool-Down Accessory. It improves the oven ventilation during the cool-down cycle. It runs completely unattended. It uses room air so it never needs to be refilled. Methods do not have to be re-validated
