Spectrometer Detects Liquid Contraband in China

Ocean Optics has supplied ten QE65000 scientific grade spectrometers to the Third Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security, Shanghai. The spectrometers have been integrated into demo units of the AY01-01 Rapid Liquid Contraband Detector, which uses Raman spectrometry to detect a number of liquid and crystal contraband substances.

Currently deployed in various airport locations and border crossings with Vietnam, the QE65000 enables the AY01-01 to detect explosives, drugs, dangerous chemicals and other hazardous liquids or transparent crystals. The device is currently capable of differentiating between up

to 200 different compounds, with the speed and accuracy of Raman spectroscopy. Its use is expected to expand beyond airports and borders to large public gatherings such as conferences and sporting events. Unlimited language options make it suited to global use.

When choosing a spectrometer for the AY01-01, performance, speed and accuracy were the Institute’s highest priorities. As it will be used by security and event personnel to screen thousands of people in a short period of time, it was critical that the device be very fast, simple, and convenient to operate with minimal training. The highly sensitive QE65000 modular spectrometer can achieve up to 90% quantum efficiency (defined as how efficiently a photon is converted to a photoelectron) with high signal-to-noise and rapid signal processing speed. Its high-speed electronics have been designed for considerable flexibility in connecting to various modules and external interfaces through USB 2.0 (backwards compatible to USB 1.1) or RS-232 communications. It is a popular choice for Raman analysis and other low-light level applications such as fluorescence, DNA sequencing, thin film reflectivity and astronomy.

Circle no. 515 Chief Cider Tester

Chemistry analysis specialist Horiba Medical has placed the first ABX Pentra 400 bench top chemistry analyser into the UK Cider industry at the Bulmers Cider Mill in Hereford. This fully automated analyser is now providing routine sugar content testing at the site, which is reliable, efficient and cost effective. Such sugar testing is critical to ensuring conformity and consistency of Bulmers’ final cider product, as well as delivering significant financial savings.

The ABX Pentra 400 provides Bulmers with an optimal test repertoire of maltose, glucose, fructose, sucrose, sorbitol, as well as tannin. Their on- site analytical laboratory at Hereford processes approximately 90 samples per week using the ABX Pentra 400, with some samples requiring the complete testing profile, whilst others require specific or single tests.

This compact bench top analyser is highly intuitive and can be flexibly operated as required by a number of different personnel during the week, so providing extremely simple, cost effective and rapid analysis.

The ABX Pentra 400 was installed as a direct replacement for an aging COBAS Mira chemistry analyser. Such is the flexibility of the ABX Pentra 400, Bulmers also selected the analyser for potential additions to its test repertoire in the future.

HPLC has been used traditionally for sugar testing in the cider industry, however, it requires extensive sample preparation and time-consuming decontamination of columns between samples. In addition, since HPLC utilises carcinogenic organic solvents, this is far from ideal in a food and beverage production environment such as Bulmers. Consequently, the complete removal of HPLC solvents from a laboratory would address health and safety requirements for disposal and storage, whilst also saving on valuable laboratory space.
