Spectrometer Tops Mount Everest

Ocean Optics recently provided a Jaz Modular Sensing Suite to the trek crew of Return to Everest 2009 – a crew including Keith Cowing, Miles O’Brien, NASA astronaut Scott Parazynski – to measure solar irradiance at extreme altitude.

Jaz was utilised to determine UV intensity levels in the Everest region where levels are typically extremely high. The handheld Jaz unit that accompanied the Back to Everest 2009 group included solar irradiance scripting language, an SD card for storage of spectra and Jaz’s lithium-ion battery.

The participants used Jaz to measure solar irradiance with a focus on UV levels at an extreme altitude. It is suggested that UV levels on Everest should be among the highest on Earth and Jaz was used to perform analysis of the nature of the sunlight during the experiment phase of the summit.

Jaz performs in a number of challenging applications-its compact, handheld design makes it ideal for fieldwork, even in challenging environments like the world’s highest mountain.

Its portability was especially important for the Everest expedition as equipment had to be

packed in by the climbers during the arduous ascent. The unit is also flexible enough to be configured with multiple spectrometer channels for process management, quality control and life sciences applications as well.

Jaz is a family of stackable, modular and autonomous components that share common electronics and communications. Included in the Jaz stack is a CCD-array spectrometer that can be optimised for a variety of radiometric measurements and a microprocessor with onboard display. Unlike traditional light meters, Jaz allows users to capture, process and store full spectra without the need for a PC. Spectral data can be transferred to a laptop or desktop PC for additional post-acquisition processing, such as calculating colour temperature, spectral intensity and colour space values.

Specac Ltd has introduced a value range of holographic wire grid polarisers for IR applications. These are provided on Barium Fluoride (BaF2), Calcium Fluoride (CaF2), KRS-5, and Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) substrates, and are manufactured at 2500 lines/mm to provide excellent polarisation performance at an economical price. They are sold from stock, and are available in standard sizes of 25mm or 50mm diameter.

Unique MOEMS Mini-Spectrometer

Hamamatsu Photonics introduce the new C10988MA; a unique, ultra-compact spectrometer built using MOEMS technology. The C10988MA is a thumb-sized device, measuring only 27.6 x 13 x 16.8mm, developed for use in portable and hand-held devices, where a standard mini- spectrometer would be too large and consume too much power. Not only small but the C10988MA is also light, weighing only nine grams.

To achieve such a small size required the combination of Hamamatsu’s MEMS and image sensor technologies. The new device uses an aberration-corrected concave grating

with a very short focal length, and a blazed grating profile for high diffraction efficiency. The grating is replicated onto the top of a convex glass lens using nano-print technology. Directly opposite the grating is placed a dedicated CMOS silicon image sensor with an on-chip slit. This 75 µm x 750 µm slit is formed into the CMOS chip using MEMS technology. The distance between the sensor and slit is only 1 mm, whilst the grating to image sensor distance a mere 8.5mm.

Through the use of these novel techniques, the C10988MA can offer a spectral resolution of 12 nm in the wavelength range of 340 nm to 750 nm, making it ideal for a range of visible light applications requiring a miniaturised spectrometer head. This is Hamamatsu working at the forefront of today’s MOEMS technologies, to bring unique and exciting products to an ever-demanding market.

Circle no. 511 Spectrometer Remote Access Capabilities

Ocean Optics has used the emergence of powerful yet inexpensive microprocessors to turn its spectrometers into web servers that can wirelessly exchange data and operation parameters. The new Remora is a plug and play adapter that makes connecting to an Ocean Optics Spectrometer as easy as putting a URL into a browser. Users can access Remora over a Wi-Fi or Ethernet network to capture real-time data and control their spectrometer’s parameters.

Compatible with Ocean Optics’ HR4000, HR2000+ and QE65000 spectrometers, Remora combines Ocean Optics’

spectral acquisition and processing power with wireless convenience. Remora installs quickly and easily via USB and leaves GPIO connections free.

With Remora’s wireless capabilities, users can carry out a range of data collection and control functions remotely. Through the Remora User Interface, users can collect data, export spectral data to delimited and graph formats and change the spectrometer’s acquisition parameters – all remotely. Remora also generates a log file that tracks current and past setups for identifying errors.

Remora also makes it possible to access and control Ocean Optics spectrometers in a network from other web- enabled devices such as iPhones and PDAs. Remora supports most web browsers.
