11 Virtual Microscopy Made Real
Olympus has introduced its cutting- edge dotSlide 2.1 virtual microscopy system, offering advanced functionality with outstanding image quality.
The Olympus dotSlide 2.1 system is based on the upright BX51 microscope, which ensures an outstanding optical performance. Furthermore, the peltier cooled dotSlide camera ensures high resolutions with fast frame rates and
high sensitivity. In combination with a PC-based workstation, slides can be scanned and uploaded with great ease.
This easy-to-use system provides superior functionality, usability and performance through the incorporation of an intuitive Scan Wizard, which guides the user step-by-step through the virtual slide acquisition process.
The standard dotSlide 2.1 MD (manual) system is suitable for fluorescent samples and allows slides and any meta-data to be manually loaded. The dotSlide 2.1 SL (slide loader) system is fitted with a slide loader, which holds up to 50 slides and is integrated with a barcode reader for full traceability and hands-off scanning, for the quick and easy archiving of slides. The dotSlide TMA is now a complete system, incorporating a tissue microarray (TMA) module with a new client server database Net Image Server (NIS) SQL.
This combination enables the user to acquire small tissue cores as single images, and upload them together with the relevant metadata and TMA slide overview to the NIS SQL database. This allows users to perform effortless analysis of the TMA and meta-data, and select individual cores from the overview TMA slide image for analysis.
Multiple large specimens can be scanned in up to 15 horizontal or Z-planes. The dotSlide autofocus function offers outstanding autofocus capabilities. Focus points can also be manually set to achieve superior results for difficult samples. In addition the extended focal imaging feature (EFI) automatically produces extremely sharp and focused images.

Unique Algorithm Improves Nitrogen Determination
Linear Regression Plus from Exeter Analytical is a unique software algorithm created from the experience of leading experts in elemental microanalysis to both improve data quality and reduce time taken to accurately determine nitrogen composition in samples.
Developed by Exeter Analytical for use with the Model 440 Elemental Analyser – Linear Regression Plus enables unmatched accuracy in the determination of the nitrogen content of combustible samples. Linear Regression Plus is available as standard on all new Model 440 Elemental Analyser's or as a free-of-charge upgrade to existing users of Model 440 Windows based software.
Data is available on request demonstrating how the new software algorithm data is able to automatically optimise nitrogen measurements, with improved operational accuracy and precision across the entire analytical range.
Designed to give accurate, reliable results, over the widest range of sample types presented for analysis the CE440 is proven to deliver unmatched operating accuracy and precision. The CE440 uses thermal conductivity detection to measure Carbon, Hydrogen and Nitrogen, after combusting and reducing a sample. Inherently more stable than gas chromatographic based systems the CE440 delivers superior performance and sampling precision over a very wide range of elemental content. Horizontal sample injection enables automatic removal of sample residue after each analysis, avoiding memory effects and gas flow problems.
Low gas and reagent consumption combined with higher reduction tube life allows the CE440 to deliver the lowest operating costs of any CHN elemental analyser available.
The CE440 is a fully automated analyser. Intuitive Windows based operating software reduces human errors through incorporation of extensive automation, comprehensive customer help and diagnostic facilities.

ADVERTORIAL 12 HACH LANGE Lab Probes for 1 Smart Meter
HACH LANGE has announced a further suite of IntelliCAL™ sensors for use with its HQd digital water quality meters. As a result, users will be able to swap sensors quickly and easily for the measurement of six key parameters (BOD, Conductivity, DO, ORP, pH, and sodium).
Ruggedised sensors with a choice of cable length (from 1m up to 30m) are available for some parameters in addition to versions to suit challenging conditions, such as low-ionic strength water. Uniquely, all IntelliCAL™ probes interchange fully with a single HQd meter, which recognises both the probe and its calibration history.
Operation of the HQd meters is further simplified with a large illuminated graphic display that guides users quickly and clearly through the measurement procedure. The operator and sample names are displayed and recorded, and the meter gives both visual and audio indication of stable readings. It can even remind users when calibration is due, so the need for operator training is minimal.
All IntelliCAL™ probes feature advanced sensor technology. For example, the dissolved oxygen and BOD probes feature HACH LANGE’s revolutionary LDO™ technology (luminescent dissolved oxygen) which means no frequent electrolyte or membrane replacement is necessary, just an annual change of sensor cap.
HACH LANGE is currently running a promotion for UK customers who already own an HQd meter – until 1st September 2009 they will receive a 50% discount on an HQd Firmware Kit which updates the unit to the latest version and enables easier data download to a PC.
Summarising the advantages of the HQd platform HACH LANGE laboratory sales manager Matt Dillon says, "HACH LANGE customers expect accuracy and reliability, but the HQd platform of smart sensors and meters delivers a new level of simplicity and flexibility to customers in a broad range of industries from the utilities to environmental research and from manufacturing to laboratory analysis."
