Laboratory Products 23 LIMS Provider Announces Three Installations in China of its Sample Management Software
Leading sample management software provider, Titian Software, has announced three orders in China for its Mosaic™ sample management software, significantly increasing Mosaic’s footprint in the Far East. The orders have come from the research facilities in Shanghai of two major pharmaceutical companies, and at the R&D base in Nanjing of a contract research organisation. Software installations will take place from mid-2012.
Explaining the significance of the Chinese deals, Edmund Wilson, Titian’s CEO, said: “Mosaic is used widely in pharma and biotech companies in Europe and the US to control and monitor all aspects of sample management, whether enterprise-wide or single-site.
These new deals in China represent a major expansion for us in this region, and show that, irrespective of where the research and development is conducted, Mosaic is the reliable and cost-effective sample management solution.” Mosaic is also used by academic and government-funded research centres, and in the Far East the software has been successfully used for over 18 months at the Experimental Therapeutics Centre in Singapore.

Applications Open for R&D Funding with Blue Ocean Grants

The program is designed to facilitate open innovation and spur the development of new optical sensing technologies with potential for market commercialisation. The international program is open to applicants from academia and industry around the world. 2011 winners had a diverse range of ideas with extremely high quality proposals ranging from novel spectrometer and spectral imaging architectures to emerging applications as diverse as low cost surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, early prostate cancer detection techniques, and new nano-litre microfluidic chip architectures.
The Blue Ocean grants are divided into two phases. Phase I grants are issued to fund initial evaluation and development of ideas and technologies to the proof of concept phase. Phase II grants will be issued to nurture a proposed technology through proof of concept in a way that enables the potential of market commercialisation.
Last year the company originally planned to award up to 10 Phase I grants of up to $10,000, but expanded that number to 13 grants when the grant committee, made up of Ocean Optics Chief Technology Officer Jason M. Eichenholz and independent photonics experts, felt strongly compelled to find funding for three additional worthy recipients. In addition, another seven strong submissions were awarded development grants. Development grant recipients were given or loaned Ocean Optics equipment to facilitate progression of their grant ideas, enabling them to be submitted to both last year’s Phase II program as well as this year's Phase I process.
“The Blue Ocean Grants program is a unique combination of open innovation and crowd sourcing from all disciplines,” explained Ocean Optics Chief Technology Officer Jason M. Eichenholz. “As 2011 was our first year, we didn’t quite know what to expect and were elated by the quality and quantity of the applications from around the world. We’re currently evaluating the strong proposals from last year’s winners to determine who will move on to Phase II funding.”

Someone needs High Grade Deep Well Plates
Deep well polypropylene microplates from Porvair Sciences are shown in a new applications report to contain almost no significant levels of leachable or extractable compounds which might affect the integrity of stored samples.
The report shows the result of GC/MS analysis carried out by Porvair Sciences on a wide range of different manufacturers’ polypropylene deep well plates to establish levels of extractable or leachable contaminants in each of them. While the Porvair plates showed no significant contaminants many of the deep well plates from alternative sources showed contaminating peaks from chemicals used in the polypropylene to assist the injection moulding process.
