17 Compact OES Spectrometer with Big Instrument Performance

The latest generation of the market-leading Spectromaxx from Spectro Analytical Instruments delivers the analytical performance of a laboratory-based optical emission system but is equally at home in the foundry. The Spectromaxx is one of the most successful OES metals analysers on the market, with thousands installed worldwide. All the important elements encountered in the metals industry can be determined with the Spectromaxx, including traces of carbon, phosphorus, sulphur and nitrogen - Spectromaxx can now measure nitrogen down to 10ppm. Sample excitation is digitally controlled, giving exactly defined plasma conditions and better analytical precision. A range of special sample adaptors for small samples is also available. The spark stand has been optimised for low argon consumption, but a new Argon Saving Module takes this further: the instrument can not only be programmed to shut off the argon flow completely when the instrument is not in use for analysis, but also to restore it automatically so that the instrument is ready and stabilised for the next analysis. Depending on the instrument duty cycle, savings of up to 40% in argon consumption can be realised. The high-resolution, temperature stabilised optics can be configured to suit a customer’s application over an available range from 140 to 670nm and use the latest multiple CCD detectors. ICAL is Spectro Analytical Instruments’ unique logic program that detects and compensates for any instrument fluctuations. Measurement of a single control sample standardises the instrument for all wavelengths and signal intensities, avoiding the need for multi- standard recalibrations and repeat measurements. Spectromaxx is one of the world’s most successful and reliable metal analysers. It is also the first to be covered by Amecare Performance Services, the newly introduced aftercare programme from Spectro. AMECARE customers enjoy fully documented ISO-certified manufacturer support, short reaction times and favourable terms on spare parts, all tailored to their individual needs and processes.

Water Baths Create A Splash

Nickel-Electro is delighted to announce the release of its specialist but affordable NE3 water baths that comprise the latest addition to its range of leading, temperature control equipment.

The baths are available in a variety of sizes, from 4, 8, 14 and 28 Litre capacities, and are supplied complete with a conveniently hinged, lightweight, clear polycarbonate gable lid, which can be angled back to enable clear access to the water bath. The lid is designed to guarantee all condensate runs back into the unit and it can be easily removed from, and refitted to, the hinge using a side-lifting handle, which not only aids operation and but also cleaning.

The units also feature a stainless steel false base, painted antibacterial surfaces and touch, flush fitting controls with illuminated LED display for viewing bath settings. The precision temperature controls and time settings feature includes an audible buzzer, along with ‘run back’ and delay-start functions that allow pre-conditioning of the water bath prior to usage. The auto-setting alarm functionality assists with the maintenance of set temperatures, which serves to help protect samples. In addition, the 8, 14 and 28 Litre models also feature a gated tap and a large bore drain that enables fast emptying.

“This feature-rich product range makes specialist-standard water bath technology available to the professional, operating within a competitive budget,” remarked Melvin Dickson, the Managing Director

of Nickel-Electro. He continued: “We are very pleased to be able present this range to market, allowing all to use and benefit from the leading-edge technology it provides.”

Nickel-Electro is a wholly independent, family-owned company, based in the South West of England that design and manufacture the well known Clifton Range of temperature controlled equipment and instrumentation, plus a comprehensive range of laboratory consumables in a variety of materials including aluminium, stainless steel and nickel.

Latest Innovation in High-Throughput Tissue Processing

Thermo Fisher Scientific, Inc has introduced the Thermo Scientific STP 420ES Tissue Processor for high-throughput tissue processing. This new tissue processor enables faster turnaround times for same-day diagnosis and leaner workflows through operational flexibility. Using a dual chamber design, which features unique rotational agitation that increases flow of traditional reagents by seven-fold to reduce processing times, the STP 420ES can process up to 420 cassettes per run. Holding 360 and 60 cassettes in the first and second chambers respectively, the second chamber allows independent processing of STAT samples, as well as special or difficult tissues, without disrupting routine workflow or requiring the use of a second instrument.

By performing multiple runs per day and two protocols simultaneously, a laboratory using the STP 420ES can benefit from increased processing capacity and superior agitation with no additional capital expenditure. Furthermore, when used in combination with the Thermo Scientific Fast Flex range of reagents, the new tissue processor can cost-effectively halve traditional processing times to only 4.4 hours for 5mm specimens and under one hour for biopsies. This is all done while continuing to provide the highest-quality results.

Compared to other tissue processors, the STP 420ES offers higher performance with the flexibility to increase or decrease processing speeds as desired, leaving the laboratory and its staff in complete control of its workflow. Additionally, the control and monitoring of both chambers is provided simply via a single touch-screen user interface.
