News & Views Company Achieves Record Turnover as Water Industry Thrives

Manchester-based specialist electrochemical sensor manufacturer Analytical Technology Inc.which provides both water and gas monitoring instrumentation, reports year on year increase in strength since its inception in 1998, culminating in a record month for the business in June. This spectacular achievement demonstrates the buoyancy of the current market for water monitoring instrumentation, despite the present economic recession. It is also a demonstration of the ongoing and imperative need for reliable water monitoring in the water utility industry to ensure a safe and

continuous supply of water. The business has had its strongest first half ever, culminated in the June sales peaking at £1.2 million; a large component of this success was attributed to the recent contract signed with Severn Trent Water, involving the purchase of 250 Analytical Technology residual chlorine monitors in June alone. The company is also supplying Yorkshire Water with more than 450 chlorine monitors and has enjoyed repeated success in recent years, providing instrumentation to other major utility companies such as United Utilities, Scottish Water, Thames Water, Anglian Water

and South West Water. Dr. Michael Strahand, General Manager at Analytical Technology, comments: “Our record turnover in June 2011 is testament to matching the needs of our customers with a team excelling at service. Top class customer service is essential in this industry, where rapid response times to situations such as water treatment issues are hugely important to maintain a safe supply of water in utility, food and beverage manufacturing and pharmaceutical plants. We have invested in a successful future by providing our team with industry leading customer service

Edinburgh-based medical devices company, Aircraft Medical has signed an exclusive agreement with Caglar Medical to market and distribute the McGRATH®

McGRATH® Series 5 and the McGRATH®

range of video laryngoscopes, the MAC, in Turkey.

Turkey's medical device market was estimated to be worth TRY2.95bn (US$2.27bn) in 2008*, making it the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. The expansion of healthcare facilities combined with rising health expenditure should see the market grow at an attractive rate of 6.6% between 2010 and 2015. David Bowie, Head of Sales & Marketing, Aircraft Medical, said: “The launch of the McGRATH®

range of video laryngoscopes in one of the regions’ fastest growing anaesthesia

apparatus markets is a significant milestone in Aircraft’s global strategy. With a population of over 70 million and a steadily growing health spend, Turkey offers a significant growth opportunity for Aircraft. In Caglar Medical, we have a partner with an excellent distribution network and a strong track record of delivering good customer service and sales growth in

anaesthesia and critical care markets.” Reşat Sermet Turgun, founder of Caglar Medical, commented: “We look forward to bringing the McGRATH®

Varian Medical Systems has been awarded a contract to supply eight TrueBeam treatment systems to hospitals in Scotland along with two Clinac®

iX linear accelerators, ancillary equipment and software. The new equipment will replace ageing treatment machines at hospitals in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness. “This is a major replacement program aimed at refreshing our stock of radiotherapy treatment machines across Scotland,” says NHS National Services Scotland’s Procurement Manager (Equipping and Technical) and project lead John Slater. The project also includes third party products and construction services; “We looked at the needs of all five centres and wrapped them into a turnkey, consolidated project for greater efficiency,” he added. Gary Currie, medical physicist at West of Scotland Cancer Centre in Glasgow, adds, “These new machines represent the latest in linear accelerator technology and they will enable Scotland’s radiotherapy departments to introduce cutting-edge treatments for the benefit of the country’s cancer patients.

There are currently twenty-five treatment machines in Scotland and this project involves replacing ten of them with advanced new systems.”

intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) treatments to 30% of patients within 12-18 months. IMRT enables dose to be delivered more precisely to the tumour than systems without IMRT and reduces dose to healthy tissue. RapidArc was designed for fast and precise IMRT delivery less than two minutes including targeting of tumours that move during treatment as the patient breathes in and out, the company said. “This is an ambitious nationwide project and we are delighted that Scottish hospitals have recognised the benefits of investing in new technologies such as TrueBeam to deliver the latest techniques such as Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT) and radiosurgery in an efficient and cost effective way, benefitting patients across Scotland” said David Scott, Varian’s UK sales director.

He said clinicians in Scotland aim to offer advanced image-guided RapidArc®

Laboratory products supplier Camlab has slashed inventory costs and achieved 99 per cent stock accuracy with warehouse management solutions from Balloon One. In 12 months, this reportedly saved Camlab £100,000 in stock costs. Camlab expects to use the software to reduce stock holdings further while maintaining customer service excellence. Camlab replaced its ageing computer system with a SAP Business One enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution. Although the new ERP software offered a warehouse management module, Camlab recognised that it would not perform the job it needed for managing such a massive number of product lines. “Our SAP partner recommended Balloon One as our warehouse IT partner. The company has significant and demonstrable expertise in integrating warehouse management systems with SAP. Its radio-frequency warehouse management system offered the flexibility, accuracy and speed we needed to automate the warehouse for maximising efficiency and reducing operational costs. The system quickly provided 95 per cent accuracy,

which was a big leap forward for us and now we consistently achieve over 99 per cent accuracy. The annual stock take is a thing of the past as we now have a perpetual inventory allowing full and instant visibility of stock and stocking levels,” said Rowan Maulder, Marketing Director, Camlab. Camlab takes a scientific approach to inventory planning by using an artificial intelligence-based tool from Balloon One. Within six months, the software helped the company to reduce stock by almost 10 per cent, which paid for the software. It also reduced dead and inactive inventory by 50 per cent and increased weekly productivity by 75 per cent. The software analyses every single product line – numbers of items, turnover, buying patterns and supply. “The software allows us to drive service levels and manage our costs. It has given us a clear view of our inventory and allows us to take firm control by helping to balance the stock and reduce stock holding. A year ago, we held £750,000 of stock and now it is nearer £650,000 while maintaining satisfaction levels. It is a brilliant piece of software,” said Rowan Maulder.
