WATER / WASTEWATER Water Testing

Advanced oil-in-water testing with ASTM D8193 and IR technology

Flood management enhanced by remote cameras

Schaffhausen, a municipality in the north of Switzerland, in the foothills of the Jura mountains, is exposed to significant flood risk. A network of five remote cameras provided by Meteor Communications has therefore been installed to help monitor key flood infrastructure. Water level monitors were already in place, but during flood risk situations it is vital that managers have access to detailed information on the factors affecting water level.

Accurate oil-in-water testing is essential for environmental compliance, industrial wastewater monitoring and upstream and downstream oil and gas operations.

That’s why eralytics has developed oil-in-water testers that replace traditional gravimetric and chromatographic methods with advanced infrared (IR) spectroscopy. This provides higher accuracy, faster results and improved environmental sustainability.

Traditional oil-in-water analysis methods, such as gravimetric determination and gas chromatography (GC), are time-consuming, solvent-intensive and prone to analytical errors. Gravimetric methods require solvent evaporation, leading to the loss of volatile hydrocarbons (‘light ends’), while GC methods only detect fractions eluting within a predefined time window. Both limitations negatively affect accuracy and reproducibility.

Importantly, eralytics oil-in-water testers ERACHECK ECO and ERACHECK X are fully compliant to the advanced standard ASTM D8193, an IR transmission method that measures extracted hydrocarbons without solvent evaporation. This approach ensures a more complete hydrocarbon profile and significantly improved precision. ASTM D8193 delivers significantly higher accuracy and precision (r = 0.25 mg/L) over a wide measuring range of 0 - 3000 mg/L as compared to other methods. Both analysers use the inexpensive and eco-friendly CFC-free solvent, cyclohexane, for the sample extraction and offer an excellent correlation with established reference methods, such as EPA 1664, ISO 9377-2 (modified) and OSPAR.

ERACHECK ECO is eralytics’ stand-alone oil-in- water tester designed primarily for laboratory and routine compliance applications. Using non- dispersive infrared transmission spectroscopy, it can quantify total oil and grease (TOG) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) in water, with detection limits down to sub-ppm levels.

For selective TPH analysis, the ERACHECK ECO can be used with Florisil®

solid phase extraction

cartridges to remove polar compounds prior to measurement. eralytics’ 10-position autosampler is an optional accessory for the oil-in-water tester ERACHECK ECO making it the perfect solution for higher sample throughput and even more efficiency.

The ERACHECK X is eralytics’ portable oil- in-water tester. Despite its compact size, it features a robust yet lightweight metal housing. Its ruggedness and reliability make it the ideal solution in tough ambient conditions for the daily work on oil drilling platforms and as a portable field tester for wastewater professionals.

ERACHECK X features a simplified extraction procedure, thus requiring minimal glassware and cleaning effort, while the fully automated measurement of the extract takes only two minutes and on-site results are available in less than 5 minutes. Despite its small footprint, ERACHECK X achieves sub-ppm precision and is fully compliant with ASTM D8193.

As a specialist provider of remote monitoring equipment, including robust, field-use cameras, Meteor Communications deployed the MRC-RPS-C Pillar system cameras at key locations. The MRC-RPS-C Pillar system is a complete, self-contained camera housed in a stainless-steel enclosure and powered by a small solar panel. This enables carbon- neutral, autonomous operation with no requirement for ongoing maintenance. All five cameras were installed and commissioned by Meteor and SH POWER engineers during a single day in March 2024. Each camera was pre-configured and equipped with a roaming SIM for reliable network connectivity. In

addition, images can be gathered on demand or when triggered by local flood conditions. Collected images are compressed to ensure reliable transmission, even when cellular coverage is poor - during storm events for example. Communication is via 4G, 3G or GPRS and image visualisation is provided by the MeteorCloud®

platform - a secure

web portal for viewing camera images, diagnostics and historic imagery.

Remote visibility of critical structures provides a wide range of benefits because cameras can verify water level readings and also provide insights into the causes of water levels rising. For example, a camera may show a blocked drainage channel, or that a level monitor is damaged, which allows flood prevention managers to quickly deploy appropriate staff and equipment.

By providing visibility of site conditions, the cameras help SH POWER to detect potential flooding incidents at an early stage. They also enable the remote assessment of risk so that staff can determine whether a site visit is necessary and safe. This remote

suite of in-situ water quality analysis tools designed to replace more costly and less convenient laboratory equipment.

A true one-handed instrument, the 6PFCE measures Conductivity, Resistivity, TDS, pH, ORP, Free Chlorine Equivalent (FCE

™), and

Temperature quickly and easily with the press of a button.

Unlike other similar meters, the 6PFCE Conductivity and TDS functions allow you to select the solution type used to model the solution under test: KCl; NaCl; Myron L’s own 442 Natural Water™ Standard; or USER, programmable by you to model a known solution. The result is benchtop accuracy of ±1% of reading in a handheld instrument. Accuracy increases to ±.1% of reading at calibration point. Temperature compensation is automatic to 25°C or can be disabled by the user as required. Autoranging capabilities provide

increased reading resolution across a broad range of applications.

pH measurements are also temperature compensated, and you can choose to perform a 1-, 2-, or 3-point calibration depending on the range of samples measured. 6PFCE

visibility of site conditions also enables managers to determine when a site visit is necessary, how many people should go and what equipment will be required. This helps to avoid unnecessary site visits, leaving staff and resources available for the most urgent requirements. It also reduces costs and lowers the carbon footprint of operations.

The cameras also provide a complete overview of the river system, allowing SH POWER to assess potential risks faster and more easily. In the UK 1,800 Meteor MRC camera systems have been in service for over 8 years with Government departments such as the Environment Agency, helping to monitor vital flood defence structures. Across Europe, over 3,500 cameras are currently in operation monitoring critical remote infrastructure such as flood defence structures, rail networks and water treatment works.

pH accuracy is ±.01pH.

The pH sensor is of a proprietary construction and includes a large potassium chloride solution reservoir for long life. Myron L pH sensors are also user replaceable.

ORP measurements utilise a 99.9% pure platinum electrode and a reference junction that is shared with the pH sensor. 6PFCE ORP measurement accuracy is ±1 millivolt.

In addition, the 6PFCE features a

groundbreaking new way to determine Free Available Chlorine based on a predictive ORP value. Empirical readings of the chemical activity of a solution are made without the

hassle and subjectivity of colorimetric and test-strip methods.

Calibration and maintenance are simple, so the 6PFCE 6PFCE

can be serviced by the user. The

is also IP67 dust-tight and waterproof, NEMA 6 submersible, and buoyant. Plus, live expert technical support is included for life.
