AIR MONITORING

Air Monitoring

Advanced air pollution monitoring improves fertiliser manufacturer’s environmental safety and operational efficiency

In the quest for safer industrial environments and healthier communities, Lifeco, a leading fertiliser manufacturer, has partnered with Kunak to monitor and manage air quality at its Marsa El Brega facility in Libya. By deploying four advanced Kunak AIR Pro stations, Lifeco has significantly enhanced its ability to safeguard worker health and minimise the environmental impact on nearby populations.

This case study highlights how Kunak’s cutting-edge air quality monitoring technology is helping industrial facilities achieve compliance, operational efficiency, and sustainability.

The Kunak AIR Pro stations installed at Lifeco’s fertiliser plant are strategically placed to ensure comprehensive coverage of air quality within and around the facility. These stations are equipped with state-of-the-art sensors capable of monitoring a wide range of pollutants, including ammonia (NH3

), carbon

monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx ozone (O3

), hydrogen sulphide (H₂S),

sulphur dioxide (SO₂), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM₁, PM₂.₅, PM₄, PM₁₀, TSP, and TPC).

This extensive range of measurements ensures that Lifeco can detect and respond to even the smallest variations in pollutant levels, enhancing its ability to maintain a safe and healthy environment.

One of the standout features of the Kunak AIR Pro stations is their autonomous operation. Each unit is equipped with solar panels, allowing them to function in areas without direct access to electricity. This self-sustaining energy model not only ensures uninterrupted data collection but also aligns with Lifeco’s commitment to sustainable practices.

The data gathered by the Kunak AIR Pro stations is seamlessly integrated into the Kunak Cloud platform, a powerful tool that provides real-time visualisation, analysis, and reporting of air quality metrics.

With this platform, Lifeco benefits from real-time alerts: notifications for pollutant levels exceeding safety thresholds, enabling swift corrective action. The Kunak system also includes customisable dashboards, thereby providing simplified access to key performance indicators and trends. The AIR Pro stations offer detailed analytics enabling actionable insights to optimise processes and reduce emissions.

This high level of connectivity allows Lifeco to transition from reactive to proactive environmental management, ensuring compliance

with regulations and advancing towards sustainability goals.

By continuously monitoring critical pollutants, Lifeco has been able to implement preventive measures that mitigate environmental impact and enhance worker safety. For instance, when air quality readings indicate a rise in emissions, the system sends automatic alerts, prompting immediate intervention.

This proactive approach has not only improved operational safety but also reduced emissions significantly, benefiting the surrounding communities. With actionable data, Lifeco has refined its emission control systems, ensuring cleaner air and a healthier living environment for nearby populations.

Kunak’s AIR Pro has enabled Lifeco to maintain a rigorous emission control standard, optimise production processes to minimise waste and therefore demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship within the fertiliser industry.

Kunak’s air quality monitoring solutions, including the Kunak AIR Pro, transform industries worldwide by providing precise, reliable, and actionable data. Whether in urban centres or remote industrial sites, these technologies empower organisations to take control of their environmental impact and pave the way for a sustainable future.

The collaboration between Kunak and Lifeco exemplifies how advanced technology can bridge the gap between industrial growth and environmental responsibility. By adopting Kunak AIR Pro stations, Lifeco has improved its operational efficiency and created a safer and healthier environment for its workers and the surrounding community.

This success story serves as a blueprint for industries seeking to balance productivity with sustainability, demonstrating that innovation and responsibility can go hand in hand.

The PSA Air Sentinel is an unattended ambient air, active sampling device that provides sampling with an accurate air volume for mercury in air studies.

The air sample is actively pumped through the Air Sentinel using a calibrated micro vacuum pump. Depending on the location remoteness and other requirements the system may be powered by a using a DC power pack, or the integrated rechargeable battery pack with solar panel options. The Air Sentinel, compete with mercury trap (Amasil) and solar panel option is shown below.

Once the sample is collected, the volume data downloaded, the AmasilTM gold traps are returned to the laboratory for analysis using the Sir Galahad (II) Atomic Fluorescence Spectrometer. The non-destructive analytical process is rapid (<5mins) and allows the gold traps to be reused for multiple deployments. This sampling approach will determine total gaseous mercury (TGM). Filtration media upstream of the Amasil trap will collect particulate mercury and oxidised forms of mercury. These may be digested and analysed using the Millennium Merlin CV-AFS.

Key User Benefits of the Air Sentinel

• Accurate sample flowrates are measured and logged allowing an accurate volume calculation.

• The volume calculations are unaffected by weather conditions or any power fluctuations.

• Lower measurement uncertainty due to larger and accurate sample volumes

• Short and long-time event monitoring • Faster turnaround of analysis • Easy deployment and installation.

• Compliant with USEPA, ASTM, iso and CEN methods

• Ability to perform sampling for atmospheric speciation measurements including particulate and oxidised Hg

• Suitable for other air component measurements such as particulate matter, benzene, VOCs and Dioxins

Air Sentinel Applications

• Some deployment examples are provided below.

• Easy addition to current air monitoring stations

• Remote outstation ambient air background data collection

• Fence Line applications (smelting operations, petrochemical plants, thermal power production, recycling activities etc)

• Government OH&S monitoring requirements

• Monitoring of volcanic and other geological events. Drone mounting capability
