Measurement and Testing 49 Solving the Issues when Measuring Food, Powders, Cosmetics and Pastes

The new Lovibond LC 100 / SV 100 combination from Tintometer, is the ideal solution for the versatile communication of colour measurement. By housing the spectrocolorimeter in a uniquely designed stand, samples can be read at an ergonomic viewing angle, enabling the measurement of ‘awkward’ substances in Lovibond optical cells. A secure cap is provided to cover the sample, protecting it from any excessive ambient light, enabling quick yet accurate readings.

The Lovibond LC 100 colorimeter enables setting and maintaining colour standards throughout the manufacturing process. It is a lightweight tool that is easy to handle and ready to use. In just over a second, it not only provides a reading of the sample but also a report telling how close the colour is to a measured standard. Users can create and measure against up to 20 self-programmable standards with a default average valuing of 3. The LC 100 automatically creates conformance reports in either PDF or Excel formats for each stored sample against each standard. These can easily be shared with a PC or directly to a compatible printer (via USB mass storage mode).

Stand-alone, the SV 100 is a very portable, quick yet accurate tool for colour measurement. However, it is the precision-designed Lovibond accessory kit that makes it so flexible. Supplied with the stand and cap to remove ambient light and 10 Lovibond 10ml cells, the instrument is now ideal for the colour measurement of food, powder, cosmetics, pastes and pharmaceuticals.

Reader Reply Card No 157 New Digital Controllers for General Application

WIKA (Germany) has now completed its portfolio of temperature controllers with two digital instruments for simple thermostat applications: The model SC58 and model SC64 close the gaps in this segment between mechanical products and complex PID instruments.

The new digital controllers are designed for a measuring range of -80 to +400 °C, and can therefore be used universally. The switch hysteresis can be set via the menu, which assists the flexibility. Both two-point controllers are equally notable for their high switching accuracy and contact rating (16 A). They are easy to use and offer a highly-visible display (13 mm high characters).

The SC58 and SC64 have the same design as the corresponding mechanical and mechatronic controllers. Users can therefore change to the digital instrument without any additional expense. Reader Reply Card No 158

Mars Rover Curiosity Equipped with Pressure and Humidity Sensors

pH Measurement and Correction of H2S for Waters

Refex (Europe) have designed their reference sensors for arduous applications particularly where fouling or poisoning conditions exist. The sensors use a highly stable non-porous polymeric interface in place of the traditional porous liquid junction used by other conventional reference electrodes.

With Refex reference sensors, the active reference area is the whole of the outside surface of the electrode; this super large contact area means that the electrode is supremely resistant to coatings.

One major problem with all pH/mV electrodes is the porous/leaking reference junctions rapidly failing. The main issue being the

poisoning of the porous junction and KCl electrolyte. This happens by H2S back-diffusing through the porous junction. H2S reacts with the Ag/AgCl (silver/silver chloride) half cell and forms AgS - this precipitation occurs in the porous junction that destroys the mV stability. This degradation happens immediately after the electrode is installed and within a few days/weeks the electrode will be useless.

The Refex electrode is exceptionally resistant to applications containing poisons such as cyanide, ammonia and sulphides. This immunity is achieved because the polymeric reference is ionically conductive but not porous and prevents elements of the process from contaminating the electrode causing drift and inevitable failure.

The Refex electrode with the unique and patented Solid-State Non Porous Reference Retrofits to the Yokogawa flow cell and connects directly to the Yokogawa connecting cable. They are also compatible with Emerson cables, typically the 399 and 381 systems.

Refex electrodes often last 5-10 times longer than current electrodes and Refex are currently offering new customers a TRY-IT / BUY-IT free 90 day evaluation. Reader Reply Card No 159

As NASA's Mars Curiosity rover is examining the soil in the Gale Crater to see if it ever offered conditions favourable for supporting life, Vaisala's (Finland) pressure and humidity sensors onboard the rover are also hard at work. The sensors are on Mars as a part of instrumentation designed by the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), and they are used to gather pressure and humidity readings in the extreme environmental conditions of the Martian atmosphere.

Vaisala has provided the project with standard Vaisala HUMICAP humidity sensors and specially customised Vaisala BAROCAP pressure sensors. First introduced in 1973, Vaisala HUMICAP was the world's first thin- film capacitive humidity sensor and a radical innovation that changed humidity measurements for good. Similarly, Vaisala BAROCAP was developed in early 1980s as a new pressure-sensing technology based on silicon processing.

Both sensor technologies are used widely in Vaisala's own humidity and pressure sensing products and systems. Thanks to their superior long-term stability and accuracy as well as their ability to tolerate dust, chemicals and otherwise harsh environmental conditions, the technologies are especially suitable for demanding industrial applications used by a wide range of industries from power and steel to life science and building automation.
