ANALYTICAL INSTRUMENTATION

Are you trying to set up your lab for PFAS analysis?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large family of over 4,000 synthetic chemicals that have been widely used in industry and consumer products. Due to their carbon-fluorine bonds, PFAS resist degradation and elevated temperatures. However, their characteristic stability means that PFAS can also persist and accumulate in the environment, which poses

certain risks to animal and human health. For this reason, several PFAS are subject to regulations restricting their use and their concentrations in various matrices.

Understanding PFAS analytical methods and regulations as well as choosing the right instruments and consumables is key to getting your lab ready for PFAS analysis. To shorten startup time, Agilent provides LC/MS/MS eMethods to get you up and running in the shortest time possible.

The PFAS in Drinking and Surface Water by LC/TQ eMethod is verified for the separation and reliable detection of 100 native and isotopically labeled PFAS in drinking and wastewaters, including 60 PFAS with reported method detection limits. The method includes target compounds that are part of standard methods and regulatory lists such as EPA Method 537.1, EPA Method 533, SW-846 Method 8327, SW-846 Draft Method 8327, ASTM D7979-19, ASTM 7968- 17a, ISO 21675:2019, Europe (EU) WfD & DWD, Japan Drinking Water Quality Standards, and Germany DIN methods. The Agilent 1290 Infinity II LC and the Agilent 6470 triple quadrupole LC/MS are used in combination to provide high-quality LC/MS/MS results. Sample preparation is performed with Agilent SampliQ weak anion exchange (WAX) cartridges, and an Agilent ZORBAX RRHD Eclipse Plus C18 column is used in LC analysis.

In addition to acquisition and quantitation methods, the PFAS eMethod includes sample preparation protocols, a detailed training video with a step-by-step workflow guide, and references to expertly selected consumables and supplies to minimize cost and effort to design and plan the required analyses.

The eMethod makes use of the Agilent PFAS multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) database for triple quadrupole LC/MS, which features data for over 100 native and isotopically labeled PFAS. The database includes details of the intrinsic properties and identifiers of PFAS such as chemical name, CAS number, and molecular formula. It also features optimized MRM parameters for the analysis of 72 native and 36 isotopically labeled compound from 14 PFAS groups, as well as retention time data from optimized methods.

The eMethod is designed for labs that want a widely applicable testing method and that do not plan to run dedicated regulated methods. For labs running regulated methods, the eMethod in conjunction with the Agilent PFAS MRM database can be a helpful building block to modify existing methods to expand analytical capabilities.

ACD/Labs has announced the launch of a new browser-based application - Spectrus JS. This new cross-platform application will work on Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems to process NMR data from all major NMR instrument vendors.

First commercial browser-based NMR processing application introduced

Spectrus JS (JavaScript) only requires access to a browser and internet connection to make NMR data processing and interpretation possible from anywhere and at any time. Such an application has been missing from the software portfolio available to researchers in the modern laboratory.

Spectrus JS is a part of the ACD/Spectrus product portfolio. It introduces server-side processing for NMR and expands the cloud capabilities of this platform. Spectrus platform supports all types of analytical techniques and is paired with well-proven knowledge management and targeted workflow applications.

“Scientists need convenient access to processing and analysis capabilities. This need has become even more critical in light of global social distancing measures. This new browser-based client application allows for facile access to these processing and analysis capabilities - even when far away from the Spectrometer,” said Andrew Anderson, Vice President Innovation & Informatics Strategy, ACD/Labs.

“ACD/Labs has a rich history in providing advanced software for NMR data processing. Accurate NMR spectral prediction is the foundation of any advanced NMR data analysis, and our NMR Predictors are universally recognised as the best in the market. Our Structure Elucidator product is second to none in available CASE Expert Systems. With the release of Spectrus JS we are taking these achievements one step further. We are providing the NMR community with the capability to use ACD/Labs’ state-of-the-art processing algorithms in a modern, easy to use interface that is accessible by any device with a browser and Internet access,” commented Dimitris Argyropoulos, NMR Business Manager, ACD/Labs.

Tanaka Scientific’s aap-6 is an automatic aniline point tester which can handle a host of different samples in accordance with ASTM D611 and ISO 2977. The aap-6 will run the 3 to 5 replicates, whilst monitoring to ensure the repeatability of the results. This analyser features an accurate and resilient infrared detector to enable accuracy with darker coloured samples. ASTM 8.0 colour samples can be reliably analysed by the aap-6 and it has regularly managed to test even darker samples. Cleaning the measuring cell can be carried out without the need for any dismantling, so aap-6 operators will find that cleaning the instrument is far simpler and safer than they will have experienced using other aniline point testers.

ISO recently created test method ISO 21493 because of the safety issues associated with aniline point testing in which aniline is substituted by p-anisaldehyde, which is a far safer reagent. This test method is called the ‘turbidity point’ and Tanaka played an active role in this method’s development. Tanaka’s aap-6 includes an ISO 21493 mode, where the instrument will replicate tests in line with the repeatability stipulated by the ISO’s method.

Cutting edge petroleum distillation system ensures simple, safe and reliable compliance with ASTM D1160

The VDS5000 Manual Vacuum Distillation System, from Koehler Instruments Co., offers the latest design for determining, at reduced pressures, the range of boiling points for petroleum products according to ASTM D1160 and related specifications. The new model features a number of design improvements from its predecessor. The VDS5000 features a removable catch tray that allows for hassle-free removal of the lower receiver. The door hinge system has be modified to reduce footprint while the doors are open. Several shut off and vent valves have also been implemented in the tubing system to prevent leaking when disconnected and to assist in draining of the system.

Additional features include, a 5 litre stainless steel surge tank in the cabinet to reduce pressure fluctuations during testing.. Dual temperature displays independently show both the overhead and flask temperature of the system. The built-in cooling fan rapidly cools the distilling flask allowing the user to handle glassware and shorten turnaround time in between test runsThe VDS5000 is equipped with a complete glassware set and accessories kit for “turn-key” installation and operation of the Vacuum Distillation System.

The standard glassware set consists of a 500mL quartz distilling flask with thermowell, vacuum jacketed distilling column and condenser assembly, water jacketed receiving cylinder, 90° elbow adapter tube, Dewar-Type Cold Trap with 10mL graduated receiver and stopcock drain, PT100 probe adapter, PT100 vapour temperature probe and PT100 flask temperature probe. The system also includes an adjustable scissor jack, heating mantle, retaining springs, ball joint clamps, connection tubing, hose clamps, quick connect adapters and fittings for easy connection of jacketed glassware and tubing and vacuum grease. An upgrade to a glassware set composed entirely of quartz is available upon request.
