Analytical Instrumentation 19 Total Sulphur Determination – Competitive and More Reliable Tan Ever Before

Fast and cost-effective sulphur determination is an important task of process optimisation and quality control in refineries. Even very low sulphur contaminations can poison the catalyst and thereby affect its effectiveness. To avoid troubles feed stocks, process streams, and final products must be monitored precisely. The most reliable method to do so is the thermal decomposition of samples followed by UV-fluorescence detection of the formed SO2 (e.g. ASTM D 7183, D 5453 or DIN 20846).

Dependent on the process step, the sulphur contents can vary in a broad range from a few ppb up to high ppm. With common analysers the achievement of reliable results takes more or less time and effort dependent on TS content. Especially for ultra-traces and very high sulphur quantities, the process time is remarkably extended.

5000 from Analytik Jena (Germany) with novel HiPerSens detector makes this job faster. The HiPerSens combines highest sensitivity with an impressively broad linear operation range. This enables fast and correct sulphur analysis independent of the concentration. Time consuming sample treatment (dilution) or enrichment steps (trap and release) are redundant.

Liquefied pressurised gases are valuable feed materials in petrochemical and polymer industry for the synthesis of higher-molecular compounds. But sulphur impurities have negative effects on final products and catalysts. This necessitates a precise monitoring regarding ASTM D 6667. Their pressure requires a special metering technique, which ensures safe sample handling, reproducible dosing, soot-free combustion, and thereby reliable results.

multi EA®

5000 from Analytik Jena

(Germany) is the solution. A special dosing valve featuring a Peltier cooling prevents premature expansion of the sample and incomplete combustion. The system can even handle lowest pressures without auxiliary gas. A further advantage is the clearly reduced maintenance effort and the faster analysis due to a flexible selection of the sample volumes.

Fast, accurate readings are now standard in routine labs – independent of operator, sample pressure and element content.

Determination of Chlorine in Crude Oil

The fast and reliable determination of chlorine in crude oil and related matrices is important for refineries. The chlorine content in crude oil and its fractions is the main reason of corrosion, which causes considerable damage to pipelines and tanks and leads to catalyst poisoning. Monitoring methods based on combustion followed by coulometric titration have a great tendency to incomplete combustion (soot). They tend to errors caused by the matrix properties and increasing sample quantities. This can be prevented by the intelligent flame sensor technology of multi EA®

Analytik Jena (Germany). It monitors and regulates the combustion, prevents soot and thus guarantees extremely accurate readings even for unknown samples.

Unlimited TS Analysis for all Petro Matrices

The petro industry is constantly striving to achieve maximum efficiency with the lowest possible effort. In case of sulphur analysis, this means to determine sulphur contents over a broad range with just one analysis system, within shortest time, and without effortful sample preparation or system optimisation. The sample spectrum includes even very complex matrices. But the quality of results of some samples varies widely depending on the mode, due to their decomposition behaviour (VGO, HCR feed, lubricants). But the multi EA®

5000 from Analytik Jena (Germany) can be operated vertically and horizontally for process optimisation. Its innovative double furnace technology creates ideal digestion conditions for any organic matrix.
