Industrial Safety Technologies Acquires
Simtronics Industrial Safety Technologies (USA) announced the addition of Simtronics AS (based in Oslo, Norway) and Simtronics SAS (based in Aubagne, France) to its platform. The companies are being acquired from UTC Climate, Controls & Security; a unit of United Technologies Corp. Simtronics is a world-class provider of sophisticated gas and flame detection systems for use in applications ranging from plant boiler rooms to offshore petrochemical facilities. The Simtronics brand will remain intact and will operate as an independent company within the IST platform. IST’s mission is to create a full line of integrated technology based detection products and services targeting heavy industrial applications. Simtronics joins other leading brands in the IST family, which together create a comprehensive portfolio of detection products with global reach: Gas Measurement Instruments (GMI) (headquartered in Scotland, acquired August 2011): gas detection with a particular strength in portable products for gas distribution, oil and gas, and shipping markets; Detcon (headquartered in Texas, acquired September 2011): gas detection sensors and control systems, with strength in fixed and wireless gas detection products for the oil and gas market; DSA Detection (headquartered in Massachusetts, acquired October 2012): consumables for leading brands of explosives and narcotics trace detectors (ETD).

We continue to find complementary companies to bring under the IST umbrella, and are focused on serving more customers on a global basis with a wide range of market-leading products.”
“We’ve made tremendous progress with IST since launching the platform in August 2011, and adding Simtronics is another big step along the path to creating a very valuable company,” said Jesse Feldman, Partner at Battery Ventures – owners of IST. “The industrial safety market presents a large and strategic opportunity, and we believe we have the management talent, a great customer base and a superior collection of products assembled in the IST platform. StocExpo Fills Extra Hall Exhibitors Flock to be Part of the Show
Exhibitors flocked to be part of StocExpo Antwerp (Belgium) in March, with 169 companies from 28 countries exhibiting at the show. Indeed, demand was such that StocExpo exhibitors filled an additional hall at the Antwerp Expo, compared with the last time the event was held in the venue.
The Antwerp show saw a boost in visitors too with
91% more attending, compared with the previous StocExpo Antwerp. Thousands of senior decision makers, from major names such as Shell, BP, ExxonMobil, Akzo Nobel, Chevron, Q8 Oils, Saudi Aramco, Total and Statoil ASA, attended the rapidly expanding event for Europe’s terminal operators, oil companies, traders and regulators.
Show visitor, Hasan Varsay, Operations Manager at Delta Rubis, the largest terminal in Turkey, says: “We got a chance to meet many new suppliers, manufacturers, facility managers and there was great networking with access to new developments and systems.”
He was not alone in finding it an invaluable opportunity to catch up with the very latest tank storage developments. According to independent research on behalf of the organisers, 85% of visitors rated their experience at the event as good or excellent, 27% of attendees placed an order at the show and a further 44% will do so as a result of StocExpo.
There was huge interest in the three-day conference which sits at the heart of StocExpo. This featured talks by 25 industry experts drawn from around the world. They explored cutting edge industry issues, macroeconomic trends and latest technologies.
Highlights of the programme included: Chris Hunt, Director General of UKPIA; Hugo Hughes, founder of Toptank Terminal Optimisation; Alan Gelder, Head of Oils Research at Wood Mackenzie; Henry Persson, Project Manager at SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden; and John Reynolds, Director at Fire Safety Training.
For the second year in a row, an impressive 100% of attendees - including Christopher Amstutz, Director, Oil & Gas Industry Solutions at Terminal Solutions - rated the quality of speakers as good or excellent: “There was a good mix of presentations and quality of presenters. StocExpo provided a very good forum for keeping up with the trends, learning about the latest technologies and most importantly networking with my peers.”
Ann Marie Brown, Product Marketing Manager at Tata Steel Energy & Power agrees: “There were some brilliant conference presentations.”
With such strong feedback, a massive 70% of exhibitors have already rebooked for StocExpo 2014. Chris Hastings, Petroleum Marketing Specialist at Philadelphia Mixing Solutions Ltd is among the many exhibitors planning to return: "StocExpo once again exceeded our expectations. We’re looking forward to 2014 - Rotterdam here we come!"
Didier BIZEC, Export Manager at SATAM, another returning exhibitor, is equally enthusiastic. He believes the scale and scope of the show is making it a critical part of the business calendar: “StocExpo allows customers to meet all the suppliers they need, everyone from A to Z, in one place.”
Vera van Dinther, Sales & Marketing Assistant at J. de Jonge Flowsystems adds: “StocExpo is not to be missed. We’re already looking forward to next year.”
Matt Benyon, Managing Director of StocExpo, concludes: “It’s extraordinary to see a show floor expand at this rate. Businesses clearly don’t want to miss out on the buzz that’s building up around StocExpo. It’s fast becoming the event where Europe’s terminal operators, oil companies, traders, regulators and equipment suppliers gather and do business – everyone wants to be there.”

Grand Opening of New Laboratory World
Shimadzu (Germany), one of the worldwide specialist manufacturers of analytical instrumentation, has created a new Laboratory World for its customers from all over Europe. The Laboratory World is located at Shimadzu’s European headquarters in Duisburg, Germany. On an area greater than 1,500 m2, testing facilities are available for Shimadzu’s entire product range – from chromatographs, spectrophotometers, TOC analysers, mass spectrometers and balances up to material testing machines. Mass spectrometry, a technology that Shimadzu has significantly shaped in recent years, will be highlighted in its dedicated space. In addition, laboratory areas for customer applications and seminar facilities are being expanded.
“The Laboratory World offers numerous opportunities both for our customers and us”, explains Jürgen Kwass, Managing Director of Shimadzu Europa. “Here, we develop solutions that are primarily geared to the growing needs of industries and science. The Laboratory World provides even better demonstration facilities to help our customers experience daily operation as realistically as possible. In addition, we offer continuing education and training to customers as well as staff members. Another goal is to create an inspiring atmosphere for our team in which they can develop new methods and technologies for future-oriented products.” says Kwass.
The continuing advances in technologies, systems and methods in recent years require companies in a wide range of industries, institutions and the scientific community to be offered a more extensive, improved and comfortable environment for continuing education and training. In addition, consumer and product safety regulations have been extended in recent years, which means that testing and analysis needs – and consequently the need for training – will continue to increase in the future.
Shimadzu has invested a total of 3.2 million Euros in the expansion of its laboratory and training facilities.
