Measurement and Testing Versatile Device Management Wizard

Yokogawa Electric Corporation (Netherlands) will release the FieldMate R2.06 Versatile Device Management Wizard in mid-May. FieldMate is a versatile software program for configuring, adjusting, and managing a wide variety of field devices used in factories and other production sites. This latest version of the FieldMate software is being exhibited at the HANNOVER MESSE 2013 trade show (8-12 April 2013). With this new version, Yokogawa will increase its share of the maintenance market.

This upgraded version of the FieldMate software supports FDT2.0, the latest version of the FDT interface. Field Device Tool (FDT) is a standard communications interface that links control systems with field devices such as pressure transmitters and flowmeters. It was developed and is promoted by the FDT Group, a non-profit organisation. The software also features a new alarm setting function with a user-friendly graphic interface that conforms to the NE107 standard: a device diagnostics specification

that was defined by NAMUR, a German-based process automation user group.

Digital communications standards are playing an increasingly important role in communications between plant central control systems and field sensors. Unlike conventional field communications, where only measured values are sent from sensors to central control systems, digital communication technologies are also capable of transferring sensor settings and maintenance information to central control systems. They also allow a central control room or other control facility to be sited at a different location, from which operators can remotely monitor and adjust sensors.

As plants often have sensors from multiple vendors that rely on more than one communications standard, versatile software tools are required for device configuration, adjustment, and management. FieldMate, a PC-based software package that supports all major industry-standard communications protocols, is ideal for such requirements. FieldMate supports the FDT/DTM open software execution framework and can be used to configure and adjust any vendors network-capable field devices, regardless of which communications protocol is used. Device Type Manager (DTM) is an FDT-based device driver that is provided by device and control system vendors.

The FieldMate R2.06 upgrade adds support of FDT2.0, the latest version of FDT. This new FieldMate version also has an alarm setting function that conforms to the NE107 standard, simplifying the task of setting complex alarms.

Major target markets for this development include facility maintenance operations in process industries such as oil, petrochemicals, chemicals, pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals, foods and beverages, and iron and steel.

Applications include configuration, adjustment, inspection, and information management for sensors in plants and other production facilities.

FieldMate is a PC-based device configuration tool with an intuitive, user-friendly interface that is used to perform initial setup, routine maintenance, and device replacement. It supports all major industry-standard communication protocols such as FOUNDATION fieldbus, BRAIN, HART(R), and PROFIBUS(R) as well as the FDT/DTM open software execution framework. In addition, support for the ISA100.11a field wireless communications standard enables the configuration and adjustment of any vendors network-capable field devices, regardless of which communications protocol is used.

Onewirelass Network Capabilities Strengthened with Over-Te-Air Device Provisioning

Honeywell (USA) recently announced the availability of OneWireless Network Release 210, which incorporates several new features that make wireless technology easier to deploy and operate, and result in lower deployment and operational costs.

New features in Release 210 include over-the-air field device provisioning and a Gateway General Client Interface (GCI) made possible by the ISA100 standard; and native integration of OneWireless field networks into Honeywell’s Experion Process Knowledge System (PKS).

“Wireless technology is transforming the industrial landscape and we are trying to make it even easier for end users to deploy and use,” said Ray Rogowski, global marketing director, Wireless, Honeywell

Process Solutions. “With OneWireless Release 210, users can benefit from the flexibility and scalability offered by the ISA100 standard while maintaining high performance and reliability.”

With the over-the-air provisioning feature, field devices can now be configured and commissioned without having to invest in handheld devices or needing to perform provisioning locally at the device. The result is faster and less costly deployment and improved worker safety.

The GCI feature, enabled by the ISA100 standard, allows operations to continue using legacy protocols and proprietary applications while making it easier to wirelessly expand those applications throughout the plant. The GCI also allows third party client applications to communicate natively using proprietary or common field protocols with wireless field instruments over the ISA100 network. Enabling operations to continue using existing applications or protocols eliminates the need to reinvest in additional equipment and new client applications, re-train maintenance and operations personnel, and to provide consistency across the plant.

Examples of GCI implementations include support for the GE System 1 condition monitoring application using GE’s Bently Nevada wSim devices and Honeywell’s OneWireless Adapter that wirelessly sends HART data from wireless HART or wired HART to HART clients.

Integration of ISA100 field device networks into Honeywell’s Experion PKS has never been easier with the new Experion interface. This feature eliminates data mapping, non-value added engineering and simplifies HMI display creation. It also allows field process alarms to be displayed on Experion’s Alarm Summary to provide operators with the data they need to make decisions. Tight integration with Experion also allows field operators and maintenance technicians to use Wi-Fi enabled handhelds to securely access process data in real-time from the field.

pH Measurement and Control of Ethylene Quench Waters

Ethylene is produced at high temperatures (750-1000°C) in a steam cracker. Olefins, Naphtha or LNG feedstock is steam cracked in a cracking furnace. The ethylene is produced when the high temperature process is stopped by water quenching. Accurate pH measurement and control, by the addition of caustic, to remove acid gases such as hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide of these quench waters is necessary to prevent unwanted emulsions forming.

Porous reference electrodes fail due to serious fouling and hydrogen sulphide poisoning present in the quench waters.

Accurate, Low-Maintenance, Long Life pH measurement and control is assured when the quench water process is controlled using the unique and patented Refex pH/mV electrodes. The Refex patented reference electrode uses a Non-Porous, ionically conducing, hard polymeric material replacing the need for porous liquid-junctions (Diaphragma). The Refex polymeric material doubles as an immobilised non-porous electrolyte and also as a protective interface/barrier that separates the quench waters from the reference Ag/AgCl half-cell and KCl electrolyte. As a result there is no liquid exchange or contact.

The Refex electrodes cannot be poisoned or fouled and continue to perform accurately even when completely coated with crude oil for examples. The coatings must remain wet and conductive.

The Refex electrodes are compatible with most pH transmitters. The electrodes shown in the image are compatible with Yokogawa pH transmitters (retrofit directly to the Yokogawa flow cell) and connect directly with the Yokogawa connecting cables.
