August/September 2010 New Additions to HPLC Columns
Thermo Fisher Scientific (USA) announce additional new phases to its flagship range of Thermo Scientific Hypersil GOLD high performance liquid chromatography
(HPLC) columns. The five new phases, making a total of 11, mean the Hypersil GOLD™ family is now one of the most comprehensive ranges available. In addition to a C4 phase which broadens the scope of selectivities for reversed phase LC, the new columns also include options for the analysis of polar compounds by ion exchange, HILIC and normal phase chromatography. All phases use the same backbone of pure silica to deliver outstandingly symmetrical peak shapes, regardless of the compound or mode of analysis.
Hypersil GOLD C4 is a low hydrophobicity column with short alkyl chain length. This has the effect of shortening retention, making the column ideal for reversed phase separations of analytes such as proteins and peptides.
Hypersil GOLD Amino columns are well suited to the analysis of sugars and carbohydrates, demonstrating excellent properties in three modes: weak anion exchange, reversed and normal phases.
Hypersil GOLD AX is ideal for the separation of proteins, peptides, other anionic species and polar molecules, and can be used as both an anion exchange column and for HILIC separations.
As a highly stable quaternary amine strong anion exchange column, designed for aqueous mobile phase, the Hypersil GOLD SAX is ideally suited for use with smaller organic molecules, including nucleotides and organic acids.
The final addition to this extensive portfolio, Hypersil GOLD Silica is a powerful and efficient tool for the analysis of non-polar and moderately polar organic compounds using normal phase LC.
With all 11 phases available with 1.9 µm particle size, the expanded range of Hypersil GOLD columns provides chromatographers with even greater flexibility to choose the most appropriate column for their application, whether using conventional or ultra-high pressure LC systems.

Analysis of Natural Gas and the calculation of its Calorific Value are important factors for both consumers and energy producers. Cambridge Scientific Instruments can offer a range of systems for Natural Gas analysis that are based upon ISO and ASTM methods.
Components analysed by the systems include N2, CH4, CO2, C2H6, C3H8, iso- and n-butane, neo-, iso- and n-pentane and C6+. Optional analysis for the presence of O2 can also be performed, this is a contaminant that can be introduced to the Natural Gas by poor sampling technique.
Systems can be configured to meet the customer’s exact requirements. Instruments can be configured for either bench top use or for mounting in a 19” rack, and can also be installed online if required, in a laboratory environment. All Natural Gas analysers are fitted with a TCD, an additional FID can also be fitted for greater sensitivity of hydrocarbons. Sample injection and column switching are operated by automatic switching valves. Analysis is typically run on packed columns, however optional capillary columns can be
added for greater separation of components up to C10. All systems are completely configured and tested with synthetic gas samples. At the end of each analysis, the included Clarity software from
DataApex
will automatically analyse the results and calculate the Calorific Value for the sample. This gives the user, the mean molecular weight, the relative density, the density, the superior Calorific Value, the inferior Calorific Value and the Wobbe index.

ACE® C18-PFP is a unique C18 bonded
HPLC column from Advanced Chromatography Technologies, which has been developed to provide alternate selectivity to all existing C18 bonded phases. The phase combines the hydrophobic characteristics of a C18 phase with the alternate selectivity offered by a pentafluorophenyl (PFP) phase – enabling the benefits of multiple interactions to be fully exploited. The phase also exhibits ultra low bleed to ensure LC/MS compatibility and demonstrates excellent temperature and pH stability. At launch, materials are available in 3µm, 5µm and 10µm particle sizes and a full range of column dimensions from high throughput through to preparative scale.
