How Middlesex provided nursing mental health student Bronwyn Evans with the support she needed.

Learning support

I’m classified as having both dyslexia and dyspraxia. So that means I have problems with words and numbers. Also, when I hear something, it takes time for me to fully understand it.

The learning support from Middlesex has been brilliant. They helped me get one-to-one tutor support so I could go through things with them. I got to know the tutor really well and I could access them by email and Skype, and in person. That’s super-helpful because I’m off-campus for a lot of my course.

Middlesex supplied me with a PC including Read and Write software that helped me listen to lectures, read course material and write up my notes. It helps focus my thinking — sometimes my mind goes off all over the place! Occasionally when I read things I understand something different from when I hear it. So it’s been great to record all my lectures and make notes later. That support has been absolutely essential to my success.

Emotional support

In my second year I was bombarded with a lot of personal problems. There were deaths in my family, there was drama and having to go overseas to deal with stuff. I felt completely overwhelmed. So it was brilliant that Health and Wellbeing went out of their way to help me.

They have a drop-in counselling service, and they made sure that I could see the same person every week. It was really helpful to go somewhere safe and know that it was OK to feel this way, and know that I could get through it.

I was familiar with counselling. But I can understand why people would be nervous going to counselling. The building is very private, but very accessible. That’s something I liked.

My lecturers were really supportive too. Middlesex has have a scheme which is like a flag saying that a student might need a little TLC. The tutors aren’t told about the problem, just that the student is going through something, making them aware. That’s very helpful.
