To help you save money, Middlesex gives you a free NUS card in your first year, which gets you 10% off the Co-op supermarket near campus, as well as many more physical and online shops. As a music student, I can also go to lots of gigs at a discounted rate or for free, which is great.

Sara Ruini BA Music Business and Arts Management Middlesex scholarships and awards

Each year we grant scholarships, bursaries and awards to UK, EU and international students to help fund their studies. We assess eligibility and funding amounts on a case-by-case basis. We also offer a number of privately funded scholarships, awards and prize funds. For more information about scholarships and awards visit www.mdx.ac.uk/scholarships

There are also scholarships available only to students from specific countries. For more information visit www.mdx.ac.uk/yourcountry

Funding sources for international students

You should check with the Ministry of Education in your home country to see what funding may be available from your own government. International students can also apply for the British Government’s Chevening Scholarships, and to a variety of private agencies and charities for scholarships, bursaries and grants to study in the UK.

Working while you study

Many students work part-time to earn some extra money and gain work experience while at university. We have a dedicated Employability

Service to help you find work and you can also use MDXjobs.com to search for opportunities. You can even find vacancies at the University, so you don’t have to leave campus to go to work. For example, become a Student Ambassador or Student Learning Assistant, join the promotional or design team at MDXSU, or visit Unitemps, your very own on campus recruitment agency. Most international students who hold a Tier 4 (General) student visa can work part time during their studies, but some restrictions apply. To find out what the rules are, visit www.mdx.ac.uk/visa

Planning a budget

Budgeting and adopting a sensible approach to spending can help you make the most of your time in London. Make the most of Middlesex’s free printing in the library, free eBooks on your course and free counselling from the Student Welfare Advice team. Here’s what to think about:

— Look at how much money is coming in — Work out how much money us going out — Calculate what’s left to spend — Keep track of your spending
