Professor Laurent Pech is an expert in European Union law who’s committed to helping his students understand complex legal issues.


Laurent is an expert in EU law — his work has been referenced in national and European courts and by EU organisations. He has represented a Turkish politician in a landmark European human rights case in which Amal Amal Clooney, a Human Rights Lawyer was also involved, he regularly offers expert advice to committees in Parliament and works with the media. His personal experience as a legal consultant helps him to bring the law alive for students in different ways. Laurent uses his research on current issues like the UK’s place in the European legal space as reading for his students. He’s also supported students on the road to success at European Law Moot Court competitions.


Through his inspiring work outside Middlesex, Laurent has built up a network of contacts that he uses to help students find work experience opportunities.


Sarah Chitongo undertakes pioneering work to make sure women from minority communities get safe maternity services.


Sarah trained at Middlesex 18 years ago and now she’s a Midwifery Educator and Manager of the Clinical Skills Department here. Her research looks at the experiences of midwives who care for women from Black Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) groups in London hospitals. In 2018 she was one of six people in the UK to win a Mary Seacole Award, which recognises outstanding work that benefits the BAME community.


Sarah says, “Maternal health is an important indicator of a country’s national health and socio-economic development. I want to change policy at the highest level around maternity services for minority communities and wider society”. She works closely with


the Department of Health and the Prime Minister arranged to meet her about her work. Her research drives the adoption of new ideas and ways of working in maternity services which leads to positive change for mothers and babies.
