An Important Announcement Regarding The 2021 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair

For nearly a century, becom-

ing a champion at The Royal Agri- cultural Winter Fair has served as an inspirational and aspirational goal for Canadians in food, agriculture and equestrian sport. Due to the on- going international impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and after considerable research and consulta- tion, The Royal’s Board of Directors today made the disheartening deci- sion to cancel the in- person 2021 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, in favour of returning to an education focused online experience this year. However, in November 2022, The Royal will mark its 100th Anniversary. We are working hard to make it big- ger and stronger than ever and are looking for- ward to celebrating with you in person. “Initially, we were optimistic that we would

be able to gather at Exhibition Place this year to celebrate Canadian excellence in food, agricul- ture and equestrian sport. But as the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 continues to create havoc around the world, it became clear that we weren’t going to be able to host The Royal in a traditional way,” stated Charlie Johnstone, Chief Executive Officer at The Royal. “Our exhibitors and competitors put everything they’ve got into the pursuit of a championship, and we owe them a world-class showcase for their efforts. We’re simply not in a place to guarantee the stability and assurances necessary to plan their paths for- ward to compete at an elite level.” The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is the largest combined indoor agricultural fair and in-

Obituary

Heffernan, Elizabeth Rose (nee Lehoveczki) It is with profound sadness and much love we

mourn the passing of Elizabeth Rose Marthe Hef- fernan on July 16, 2021. Liz’s husband and devoted partner Carl will miss her immensely. Their rela- tionship is one to which many aspire. She was his biggest supporter and confidant. Their marriage of 46 years was a loving partnership in the truest sense.

Liz had the heart of a lion and the passion of

ternational equestrian competition in the world. It is a truly unique event comprised of many com- ponents, including sporting events, livestock shows, trade shows, family attractions, and top- ranked international equestrian competitions. In a typical year, The Royal brings together thou- sands of competitors and animals and nearly 300,000 guests to celebrate the best in agricul- ture, local food, and equestrian competition. We do not take this responsibility lightly. The Royal’s Board of Directors, staff and management remain committed to creating a safe and healthy space for everyone to gather, compete and celebrate when the time is right. “We’re excited to be setting our sights on

2022, which will mark The Royal’s 100th An- niversary,” concluded Johnstone. “As we ap- proach our second century, The Royal is more relevant than ever, and it is our privilege to be Canada’s home for local food, agricultural and equestrian excellence.”

Fairs are still cancelled. In our August 1987 issue

The Rider was the only

Canadian equine publication in- vited to the Grand Opening of the Ocala, Florida Hilton Hotel back in 1987. The hotel at the time was located in an area of Florida that boasted over 400 horse facilities in the immediate area. I had the luck to be provided with presi- dential suite. The hotel was built in the middle of horse country. I was the first occupant of that suite. Other USA equine publica- tions were there but as I was the only Canadian they gave me the Presidential Suite. We had an es- corted tour of the the ranch of Martha Dean Thurman and treated to a fabulous ranch meal. Martha was a lovely and gracious host. She raised Quarter Horses in the middle of Thoroughbred country. I was passing through Ocala a few years back and de- cided to drop by and speak to the manager and let them know that I had been one of their first guests before it opened. The en- tire area is full of businesses and high rise and sub divisions. What

a shame. It was I a beautiful part of Ocala/Marion County.

Flamboro Downs were ad-

vertising the Third Running of the Confederation Cup. That’s about all we reported on in the August, 1987 edition of The Rider.

My Turn Not much to gripe about in

this issue. Things have not changed much since my last rant.

The TV commercials are

still sickening to watch. They must employ rank amateurs at the agencies that produce them, some are overly obnoxious.
