We’re all hearing the same message lately: quality candidates are becoming like gold dust. But, did we as an industry realise the true impact of a diminishing workforce? Should we have been more prepared? And, what does it mean for hospitality going forward?

To get an insight into how venues across the UK are dealing with this shift in candidate attraction, we spoke to Hospitality Jobs UK, a hospitality- specific job board run by recruitment specialists for our industry.

Q A

How do businesses attract quality candidates? We’re speaking to venues across the industry with massively varying needs, mostly with the same challenge: Attracting and keeping staff. More than ever, it’s critical to help new talent understand the career paths hospitality can lead to and promote our industry as a great place to work. It’s not a stop-over job, but a long-term profession that is respected and should be aspired to.

What are your top tips for making a job advert stand out?

July 2021 www.venue-insight.com

The way a job advert is written says a lot about the company. We have full details on our website, but our top 3 tips are:

A

1 Use a suitable and appealing job title that targets your desired candidate.

2 Play with format, section the information, use numbers or bullets, avoid endless paragraphs and showcase company culture – people are attracted to tone of writing.

3 Always include benefits, nowadays perks can be a deal- breaker if a candidate applies or not.

If I can only offer minimum wage, how do I attract people? Benefits are key these days. Demonstrating you can look after your staff outside of a salary goes a long way!

Is it possible to recruit with little to no budget? One word – apprenticeships! Available to any hospitality employers, giving jobseekers the opportunity to learn whilst working. Getting new talent into the industry can only be a good thing, right? For more information go to: hittraining.co.uk

As venues can only offer table service, staff are tired! What’s the best way to keep staff motivated and engaged? We’ve heard about a few changes that have made a huge impact:

Condensing shift patterns so employees are getting longer periods of time off.

Look internally for promotions, also an excellent way to plan for full re-opening.

Review the tips policy!

Implement a ‘refer a friend policy’, a good way for them to earn a bonus whilst you gain a new fab member of staff!
