nce a fl ourishing Saxon sea port, Beccles is set in rolling countryside and offers fantastic views over, and
access to, the surrounding Southern Broads. The winding cobbled streets are lined with quirky shops and restaurants, and there’s plenty of historical interest too, including Beccles Museum and the Bell Tower. There are an array of popular events, festivals and entertainment held throughout the year, making this a town that hasn’t lost its tight- knit community roots.
What to see and do Wander to the popular quayside area of Beccles to appreciate the town’s pretty riverside location. Take to the water in a canoe, kayak or dayboat from Hippersons Boatyard, or hop aboard the Big Dog Ferry and take in the tranquility and passing wildlife on a trip to The Locks pub in Geldeston.
If you fancy a dip while the weather is good, pop to Beccles Lido – a traditional heated outdoor pool with plenty of space to swim, sunbathe and soak up some summer rays. Staying on dry land, there are a vast array of independent shops to browse, offering everything from clothes, toys and gifts to delicatessens fi lled with delicious locally- produced goodies. In August, the renowned Antiques
Street Market returns for the fi nal time this year and is a must-visit for anyone looking to browse vintage items, collectables and antiques.
Lunch If you’re in need of nourishment, make your way to the Wine Vaults, the town’s self- professed ‘friendliest bar and restaurant’. The restaurant covers three fl oors, including the cosy cellar, and serves hearty portions of locally sourced ingredients. In the traditional bar area you’ll fi nd a roaring fi re (though hopefully not at this time of year!) and an extensive list of wines, cocktails and real ales. Live music events occur every other Sunday, so you really can eat, drink and be merry.

Drinks Want to round off your day in Beccles with a nightcap? The Ingate is a long-serving, traditional pub perfect for just that. There are two bars, a pool room, a darts area and garden in which to enjoy a real ale, a cocktail or maybe a nibble from their renowned street food menu.
